When Halloween approaches, there is no bird that represents it better than a watchful and wise owl perched somewhere watching zombies, headless knights, witches and goblins go from house to house in search of sweets. Do you want to design one to hang behind the door or on the window but you don't know where to start? Let us help you! With a few baselines and a few scribbles, your owl will come to life. That's how!
Steps
Step 1. Draw a large oval
It should take up about 2/3 of your sheet. It doesn't have to be perfect, but try to make the height double the width, as in the image below:
Step 2. Make the eyes
Draw two circles at the top, roughly in the first fifth of the oval. Inside each one, draw two small circles and color them black, to make the pupils. You can indulge yourself with your eyes, if you want you can make a serious owl, with the pupils in the center; or if it is looking at something you can have it shifted to the right or left; or you can make a wacky owl, with squinting pupils.
Step 3. Draw the horns
Make a very wide "V" shape, protruding from the oval and with the tip of the "V" between the eyes, more or less in the center. The tip will add personality to your owl. The less pointed, the more "docile" the owl will seem. The deeper it is, the angrier the owl will seem. (In the example below, the red lines indicate the initial shape, while the black lines indicate the finished horns.)
Step 4. Draw the wings
Make curved lines on the sides, starting at the top, indenting about 1/4 of the oval, and then ending at the bottom.
Step 5. Add the claws
Make elongated ovals under the owl, three on each side, then two horizontal lines per perch. This doesn't have to be straight, you can make it look like a branch. Likewise, the claws don't really have to be ovals, they need to be pointed, especially if you're drawing an evil owl.
Step 6. Add some feathers
Make small "U" in the area between the wings, to make them look like small feathers.
Step 7. Make the beak
Place a narrow "V" slightly below the eyes.
Step 8. Color
If you want, you can color the "wings" brown and the head and chest a lighter shade.
Step 9. Be creative
Add more details if you like. You can make lights and shadows as suggested below, or do them as you like. Now that you know how to draw an owl, you can create a beautiful flock of them for Halloween!
Step 10. Finished
Advice
- Use colored pencils to add more details.
- The smaller the owl, the less detail you will have to add, while for a large owl it will take a lot of feathers.
- Put on some pointed glasses to make him look wiser.
