So you decided to change your URL on Tumblr? You are probably tired of your old address, or you have thought of a different URL that would better describe what you are trying to do. Changing your Tumblr URL (also known as 'Tumblr Name' or subdomain) is very simple, and won't cause you to lose any users who follow you. Here's how to do it.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Change your Tumblr URL
Step 1. Log in to your web browser
Step 2. Connect to the Tumblr site
Step 3. Select the gear icon at the top of the page
Step 4. Identify and select the untitled entry in the menu on the left of the page
You should find it right after the 'Apps' tab.
Step 5. Delete the old web address placed in the 'URL' field found in the 'URL' section of the page
Now type in the new 'URL' you wish to use. You will be able to choose any web address not yet in use by other users.
- A good Tumblr URL needs to be able to grab the attention of your potential 'followers', delivering your message immediately.
- A good URL on Tumblr could be the difference between being reblogged or not.
Step 6. Press the 'Save' button located at the top right of the page
However, you will find a second identical button at the bottom of the page. Finished, you now have a new Tumblr URL!
Step 7. Understand what happens when you change URLs on Tumblr
After making this change, Tumblr will automatically modify all pages associated with your blog, as well as every single post, to link them to the new URL.
- Any links to navigate from one post or page to another, as well as the 'Archive' page, will be updated automatically.
- However, any links you entered manually, such as the link to your blog description or the external link that redirects to your Tumblr page, will need to be updated manually.
Method 2 of 2: Redirect the Old Tumblr URL to the New one
Step 1. Create a secondary blog that has the same URL as your old blog
The reason for this action is to allow those followers who will access your old URL to be automatically redirected to the new URL.
Step 2. Select the 'Customize' item, then press the 'Edit HTML' button
Step 3. Replace the HTML code
Delete the current lines of code and replace them with the following: '' (without quotes)
Step 4. Complete the HTML code with your blog data
Replace [type in new URL] with your blog's new URL.
Step 5. Enter the waiting time before automatic redirection to the new blog occurs
Replace the [wait in seconds] parameter with the number of seconds that must pass before your followers are automatically redirected to the new URL. Enter "01" for a one second wait or "10" for a longer wait time.
Warnings
- Any link, referring to your old blog, used by other users to post, reblog or simply access your posts will no longer work.
- Your new Tumblr account may not have access to the redirect options. Only from the old account will you be able to activate the redirect function to the new URL.
