This article shows you how to change the size of icons and text on a Windows computer by increasing or decreasing the video resolution of the system.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Windows 10
Step 1. Select an empty spot on the desktop with the right mouse button
This will bring up a context menu.
Step 2. Choose the Display Settings option
It is one of the items placed at the end of the drop-down menu that appeared.
Step 3. Locate and select the Advanced Display Settings item
This link is located at the bottom of the page.
Step 4. Select the drop-down menu located inside the "Resolution" section
A drop-down menu will appear showing all the resolutions supported by the system (for example "800 x 600", "1024 x 768", etc.).
Step 5. Choose the resolution you want to adopt
The value that should best fit the actual screen size you are using is highlighted by "(Recommended)".
The general rule is that the higher the resolution adopted (therefore the larger the values that characterize it), the smaller the size of the icons and text displayed by the computer
Step 6. Press the Apply button
It is located at the bottom of the "Resolution" section. The resolution you choose will be applied to your screen.
Step 7. Press the Keep changes button
If the new resolution you set does not fit your screen, you can press the button Reset to return to the previous settings or you can just wait a few seconds.
Method 2 of 5: Windows 7 and Windows 8
Step 1. Select an empty spot on the desktop with the right mouse button
This will bring up a context menu.
Step 2. Choose the Screen Resolution option
It is one of the items placed at the end of the drop-down menu that appeared.
Step 3. Select the drop-down menu located inside the "Resolution" section
A drop-down menu will appear showing all the resolutions supported by the system (for example "800 x 600", "1024 x 768", "1920 x 1080", etc.).
On Windows 7 systems there may be a vertical slider which, if dragged up or down, allows you to increase or decrease the screen resolution
Step 4. Choose the resolution you want to adopt
The value that should best fit the actual screen size you are using is highlighted by "(Recommended)".
The general rule is that the higher the resolution adopted (therefore the larger the values that characterize it), the smaller the size of the icons and text displayed by the computer
Step 5. Press the OK button
It is placed at the bottom of the page. You will be asked to confirm the new settings.
Step 6. Press the Yes button when prompted
This will save the new resolution and apply it to your screen.
If the new resolution you set does not fit your screen, you can press the button Reset to return to the previous settings or you can just wait a few seconds.
Method 3 of 5: Windows Vista
Step 1. Select an empty spot on the desktop with the right mouse button
This will bring up a context menu.
Step 2. Choose the Customize option
It is the last item in the drop-down menu that appeared.
In some versions of Windows Vista, this option is referred to by its name Property.
Step 3. Choose the Screen Settings item
This link is located at the bottom of the "Personalization" window.
Step 4. Drag the "Resolution" slider to the left or right
It is located at the bottom of the "Display Settings" window. Drag the indicated slider to the left to decrease the screen resolution or move it to the right to increase it.
Increasing the resolution will decrease the size of the elements displayed on the screen, while decreasing the resolution it will increase. If you're having trouble locating the tools you need on your computer screen, try lowering the video resolution. If your goal is to get the sharpest and clearest image possible, select the recommended resolution for your screen
Step 5. Press the OK button
It is placed at the bottom of the page. You will be asked to confirm the new settings.
Step 6. Press the Yes button when prompted
This will save the new resolution and apply it to your screen.
Method 4 of 5: Windows XP
Step 1. Select an empty spot on the desktop with the right mouse button
This will bring up a context menu.
Step 2. Choose the Properties item
It is the last option of the context menu that appeared. The "Display Properties" window will appear.
If the "Settings" tab of the "Display Properties" window is not automatically selected, do so manually. It is positioned in the upper part of the latter
Step 3. Drag the resolution slider left or right
It is located within the "Screen Resolution" pane and is located in the lower left part of the "Display Properties" window. Drag the indicated slider to the left to decrease the screen resolution or move it to the right to increase it.
Increasing the resolution will decrease the size of the elements displayed on the screen, while decreasing the resolution it will increase. If you are having trouble locating the objects you need on your computer screen, try lowering the video resolution. If your goal is to get the sharpest and clearest picture possible, select the recommended resolution for your screen
Step 4. Press the Apply button
It is located in the lower right part of the window. In this way the chosen resolution will be set for a limited time in which you can choose whether to adopt it permanently or restore the previous settings using the pop-up window that appeared.
Step 5. Press the Yes button when prompted
This will save the new resolution and apply it to your screen.
If the new resolution is not suitable for your screen, simply wait a few seconds; the previous video settings will be restored automatically
Step 6. Press the OK button to close the "Display Properties" window
The new resolution you set will be saved and applied.
Method 5 of 5: Windows ME
Step 1. Use the right mouse button to select a free spot on the screen
This will bring up a drop-down menu.
