You may have noticed, perhaps with annoyance, that there is no option to change the game resolution within the Age of Empires 2 HD settings. If your screen is small you can still enjoy the acclaimed high definition version of the game, but as many users today use large screens, the lack of a resolution setting is a real problem. Fortunately, there are some tricks that can fix it.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Change the Desktop Resolution in Windows
Step 1. Open the Control Panel
The resolution of the game is directly related to that of the computer desktop, so you can change it by changing the system settings. To get started, open the Control Panel.
Step 2. Open the Screen Resolution page
Under "Appearance and Personalization", click "Change Screen Resolution". In the "Resolution" drop-down menu, click on the format you prefer; your choice will be applied to the desktop and Age of Empires 2 HD. The best option varies according to the size of the monitor. Here are some of the recommended combinations:
- Cathode ray tube 14 "(4: 3 format): 1024x768.
- 14 "Notebook / 15.6" Laptop / 18.5 "Monitor (16: 9 aspect ratio): 1366x768.
- 19 "monitor (5: 4 aspect ratio): 1280x1024.
- 21.5 "monitor / 23" monitor / 1080p TV (16: 9 aspect ratio): 1920x1080.
Step 3. Apply the changes
Once you have selected the resolution you prefer, click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the screen and you will accept the changes.
Step 4. Start the game
The easiest way to do this is by double clicking on the icon on the desktop. The game will be displayed in the resolution you set.
You can change the resolution from the Control Panel even after starting the game. Just press the Windows key to minimize the game and open the Start menu. Open the Control Panel and change the resolution from the Screen Resolution page, then return to the game by clicking on its icon in the task bar
Method 2 of 3: Change the Resolution on a Mac
Step 1. Launch Age of Empires 2 HD
You can do this by clicking on the game's icon in the Dock (an app launch bar found on either side of your Mac's desktop) or on the Launchpad.
Step 2. Open the Apple menu
You can do this by pressing the three-key combination Ctrl + Fn + F2. The game will be minimized and the Apple menu will open.
Step 3. Open System Preferences
You will find this item in the Apple menu; select it to open the settings that interest you.
Step 4. View the screen settings
From the System Preferences page, click "Screens". Inside the menu you will see another item called "Screen"; click it and the list of available resolutions will open.
Step 5. Select the resolution you prefer
The screen will automatically change after your click. If you don't know which option to choose, try them all until you find the best one.
- To switch to the game and evaluate what the new resolution looks like, press Command + Tab until the AoE icon is selected. To return to the display settings page, press the same key combination until the Display tab is selected.
- Keep experimenting until you find the best resolution.
Method 3 of 3: Play in Windowed Mode
Step 1. Start the game
You can change the resolution of Age of Empires 2 HD by using the mouse to adjust the size of the game window after setting it to window mode. Start by starting the game like this: Start button> All Programs> Microsoft Games> Age of Empires II HD or by double-clicking the game icon on the desktop.
Step 2. Go to Game Settings
Press the F10 key to open the menu, then click "Options".
Step 3. Turn off "Full Screen" mode
On the options page, uncheck the Full Screen box in the center. The game will be displayed in a window.
