Did it happen to you? You've just spawned your first new Minecraft world and can't wait to start building, creating and exploring the world around you. Suddenly, you find that you have no tools and no way to get them - what to do? Easy: Create a crafting table, which gives you the ability to craft many different items, including all the basic utensils. Fortunately, you can make your own with your bare hands!
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Get Wooden Planks
Step 1. Find a tree
To get a crafting table, you'll first need to collect some wood. The easiest way to do this is to find a tree. Unless you are in an area devoid of trees, such as a desert or ocean biome, you should see them not too far from you.
There are many other natural sources of wood blocks, but they are much rarer than trees. Wood blocks, for example, are created as part of houses in lowland villages or savannas, as well as in witch huts
Step 2. Break and collect the wooden blocks
Once you've found a source of wooden blocks, collecting them is simple. Break them with your hands by approaching them, looking at them and holding the "attack / destroy" button. Cracks will arise on the block that will eventually break. If you have an ax, the process will be quicker, but you don't need one to break the wooden blocks. Collect the wooden block once it is broken.
- The default buttons for the "attack / destroy" action in the different versions of Minecraft are:
-
Computer:
Left click
-
Pocket Edition:
press and hold the block you want to break
-
XBox 360:
Right trigger
Step 3. Make wooden planks out of the wooden blocks
Open inventory. You should see a single block of wood in one of the spaces. Each block of wood can be transformed into four wooden planks, the number needed to make a crafting table.
- Use these instructions to make wooden planks in each version of the game:
-
Computer:
Press E to open inventory. Drag the wooden block into the top right crafting grid. Drag the four wooden planks to your inventory.
-
Pocket Edition:
Open your inventory and select the wooden block. Press on the wooden planks, then press on the right planks and add them to your inventory.
-
XBox 360:
Open the crafting menu with X. Select the wooden planks from the Structures menu and confirm your choice with A.
Part 2 of 2: Creating the Creation Table
Step 1. Use the wooden planks to make the table
Now, you should have four wooden planks, exactly as many as you need to make a crafting table. No matter the type of wood (e.g. oak, birch, etc.) - they will all do.
- To make the table, use the following steps:
-
Computer:
Press E to open inventory. Left click on the wooden planks, then right click on each of the four spaces in the upper left. Drag the crafting table to inventory.
-
Pocket Edition:
Open your inventory and select the wooden planks. Press the crafting table, then press the crafting table button on the right to confirm.
-
XBox 360:
Open the crafting menu with X. Scroll right in the structures menu and select the crafting table. Confirm your selection with A.
Step 2. Place the table in the world
Congratulations - you just created a crafting table. However, you cannot use it to make tools and other objects until you place it somewhere in the world. To do this, first make sure it's in one of the spaces on the item bar. Then, go to the crafting table, find a free space on the ground and use the "place block" button to place it in the world.
- The default buttons for the "square" action in the different versions of Minecraft are:
-
Computer:
Right click.
-
Pocket Edition:
Press the area where you want to place the block you have equipped.
-
XBox 360:
Left trigger.
Step 3. Open the crafting table menu to start crafting tools
After placing the crafting table on the ground, you can use it right away. Opening the crafting table menu allows you to create dozens of items and tools, which is why it's essential for every Minecraft player. It also gives you a larger 3x3 grid in the computer and Xbox versions (compared to the 2x2 you had available so far). However, you will not be able to create anything if you do not have the materials to do so in the inventory (see next step).
- The default controls for using the crafting table in the different versions of Minecraft are:
-
Computer:
Right click while looking at the table.
-
Pocket Edition:
Press the crafting table.
-
XBox 360:
Look at the table and press the left trigger.
Step 4. Use the crafting table to create the basic tools
Now that you have a crafting table, you can use its larger grid to craft many of the basic items you need to start exploring and conquering the world. The crafting "recipes" described below will give you a basic set of wooden tools that you can use to collect stone, fight monsters and more. For the full list of crafting recipes, check out the official Minecraft Wiki, which features description and recipe pages for all the items you can craft in the game.
-
Sticks:
Two wooden planks (arranged vertically in two boxes)
-
Wooden Pickaxe:
Three wooden planks along the top row, a stick in the middle box of the two rows below. Great for stone digging.
-
Wooden Sword:
A stick in the lower center box, with two wooden planks in the boxes above it. Good for fighting monsters.
-
Wooden shovel:
One plank of wood in the top middle box, two sticks in the boxes below. Excellent for digging the earth.
-
Wooden Ax:
A stick in the middle square of the last two rows, a wooden plank in the top middle square, in the one in the upper left corner and the left square in the second row. Excellent for cutting wood.
Advice
- Note that the PlayStation 3 version of the game is nearly identical to the Xbox 360 version in terms of menus and functionality.
- You can find randomly generated crafting tables in bookstores and witch huts.
- In Minecraft Pocket Edition, you will also need a "stonecutter" to create many basic items from stone. This object is created exactly like a crafting table, but with four stone blocks instead of wooden planks.
