Many travelers, especially those who do it for business, find themselves living for weeks or months in a hotel room. The urge to try new restaurants or room service passes after a while, and you crave a home-cooked meal. However, many hotel rooms are certainly not used for this purpose. Here's how to solve the problem in an innovative way.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Part 1: Breakfast
Step 1. Prepare the porridge using the American coffee maker
Pour the contents of two sachets of instant oats into the pitcher. Add a sachet of honey, a disposable jar of jam and a pinch of salt. Place a tea bag (e.g. orange) in the filter basket. Pour 200-300 ml of water into the coffee maker, turn it on and the porridge will be ready in about 5 minutes.
- Common oats (not instant oats) can also be cooked in hot water or in a microwave.
- Don't have honey? Try cutting some fresh or dried fruit. Raisins, apples, strawberries and other fruits will add a touch of sweetness to the porridge. And they are readily available.
Step 2. Cook the bacon with the iron
Cut the bacon strips in half and place them between two aluminum sheets. Crumple the ends of the sheets and join them together to prevent grease from leaking. Iron the bacon, carefully opening the foil every two or three minutes with a fork to check if it is ready and to let the steam escape. It will take about 10 minutes to get crunchy bacon.
Step 3. Use the iron to make an omelette
Turn it over, so that the boiling surface is horizontal. Cut a small aluminum foil, fold it to look like a bowl and sprinkle it with the fat from the bacon or butter. Break a couple of eggs inside. Wait for 7-10 minutes (the eggs should mix well), then flip the omelette.
Step 4. Prepare hard-boiled eggs using the American coffee maker
Carefully place the eggs in the jug and allow them to be submerged in the hot water. Then, let them soak for a few minutes.
Method 2 of 2: Part 2: Lunch / Dinner
Step 1. Prepare some noodles using the American coffee maker
Put the noodles in the jug. Add enough water to cover them completely and turn on the coffee maker. Wait for the water to flow into the carafe; once it has covered the noodles, leave them to soak for about 3 minutes, or for as long as necessary for them to soften. Then, drain them carefully and season them.
Step 2. Make a grilled cheese sandwich using an iron
You can use the same method to cook a quesadilla. In addition, this method is also ideal for making dessert, just use peanut butter or chocolate chips.
Step 3. Use the iron as a grill
Wrap the chicken, fish, vegetables, etc. with aluminum foil. Place it on the hot side and turn the iron on to the highest temperature available. Just make sure you have sealed the aluminum foil tightly, so that no liquids drip, otherwise you run the risk of ruining the ironing surface. The longer a food takes to cook, the more likely it is to make mistakes, so try foods that can be prepared quickly.
Step 4. Use the American coffee maker as if it were a steam cooker
Place carrots, broccoli and other vegetables in the filter basket. Run the water through the jug several times to get the desired result.
Step 5. Make instant rice in the American coffee pot
Run the right amount of water into the carafe (read the instructions on the rice package). Then, add the rice to the pitcher. Leave the coffee maker on until the rice is properly cooked and has absorbed most of the water.
Step 6. Make a sauce using the American coffee maker
Instant sauces can be made by pouring the mix into the pitcher and running hot water. You shouldn't put anything else in the water compartment. Its purpose is only to heat the water through a very specific mechanism. Other ingredients will burn because they cannot go through this process, ruining the coffee pot.
Step 7. Prepare the lemon pepper chicken using the American coffee maker
Put some chicken breast in the jug. Add enough water to cover ¼ of the meat. Sprinkle with pepper and lemon dressing. Turn on the coffee maker and let each side cook for 15 minutes. Add milk and butter to the remaining liquid. Let these ingredients heat up for about a minute and add some potato flakes for a quick side dish.
Step 8. You don't have to cook
You can easily make a salad. Just wash the ingredients in the bathroom sink. Another solution is to make sandwiches after buying the supplies at the supermarket, but you could also opt for ready-made sandwiches.
Advice
- Clean the coffee maker carefully after using it.
- These tips may also come in handy for a college student living in a strict regulation dorm.
- To travel lighter if you are moving from one city to another or to reduce your outings, have a full meal at the restaurant once a day. Lunch is ideal because it will give you the energy you need and is less expensive than dinner. Also, it is at this time of day that you will probably not be in the hotel. When you eat out, choose dishes that you cannot prepare so easily on your own. In the morning and evening, cook lighter meals. Eggs, bread and cereals are useful ingredients for making breakfast quickly. Sandwiches, instant soups and ready-made foods can be combined for simple dinners.
- If your hotel has a breakfast buffet, you can get the plates, glasses, utensils and condiments there.
- You should practice at home before you leave.
- Use the ice bucket as a salad bowl, but clean and disinfect it carefully first. It can be full of bacteria.
- If you want to cook in your room, plan it before you leave. Look for a hotel, hostel or other accommodation with cooking facilities. Many hotels offer microwaves, toasters and mini fridges in the rooms. Many hostels have communal kitchens. Long-term accommodations have small kitchens. All of these solutions greatly expand your options for cooking yourself.
Warnings
- Keep in mind that cooking in a hotel room usually breaks many regulations. If they catch you red-handed, they may charge you a fine, request you to replace the devices you used, or send you away from the hotel. You should book a room that has cooking facilities (microwave, refrigerator, oven / stove, etc.) before following the suggestions in this article.
- If you break a hotel item, you will have to pay for it, so be careful!
-
While cooking, do not leave electrical devices unattended for even a minute.
Remember that you risk starting a fire if you leave the iron on. Be very careful and never let children cook alone
-
Clean the coffee maker and filter before trying to cook. You don't want steamed cauliflower to taste the same as three-day-old coffee!
If your coffee pot has a dark, reddish-orange stain, it may have been used to make methamphetamines, so the resulting coffee could be dangerous to your health. If you notice a chemical smell in the room, this is another alarm bell
- You should ask the hotel for permission before cooking (they will probably say no anyway).
-
Do not let the food you intend to eat come into contact with a dirty surface or device.
After use, thoroughly clean everything, especially the coffee pot and the iron, which has come into contact with poultry or raw meat (a lack of attention could put you at risk of contracting salmonella)
