The American Bully is a type of pit bull. Although they are small and defenseless as puppies, they quickly grow into large, muscular dogs. In order for puppies to grow up healthy, they need a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet. For this there are various types of dog food created specifically to meet the nutritional needs of this particular breed. Choose high quality kibble and strengthen the puppy's diet with raw meat, proteins and vitamins.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Choose Quality Foods
Step 1. Consult your veterinarian to choose the type of food that best suits your Bully puppy
Due to their constitution and breeding, Bullies are a unique breed of their own with special dietary needs. Shortly after your puppy is adopted, ask the vet what kind of foods he suggests for your dog.
Always ask for his opinion before giving any type of supplement to the dog. Your vet will be able to tell you if they are needed or not
Step 2. Choose a type of food that contains at least 30% protein
American Bully puppies need to strengthen their muscles from the first months of life. It is important that the food they consume has enough protein to aid them in muscle development. As a general rule, to ensure sufficient protein intake, the first three ingredients on the list must be meat.
- Read carefully the food labels dedicated to puppies of specific breed. The package should expressly state how many proteins are contained in each type of food.
- High quality dog food is also often sold in supermarkets.
Step 3. Choose a food that contains at least 20% fat
Like all puppies, little Bullies need a lot of fat in their diet. A relatively high-fat diet will keep puppies healthy and help them grow. In addition, food with a high percentage of fat will help the puppy to easily dispose of proteins and other nutrients.
If you give your Bully puppy food that is less than 30% protein and less than 20% fat, the dog may have problems growing up
Step 4. Consider adding protein supplements to your dog's diet
In order for the puppy to develop a muscular system according to the owner's wishes, you can add protein supplements to his diet. The supplements contain vitamins, proteins and nutrients that will help the puppy build muscle mass.
- Brands of supplements that can be safely given to your puppy include Vita Bully, Bully Max, and the specific muscle mass formula made by MVPK9.
- It is possible that a pet store already has these supplements in stock, otherwise you can ask if it is possible to order them.
Part 2 of 2: Follow a regular diet plan
Step 1. Feed your Bully puppy 2-3 times a day
From 12 weeks to 6 months, he should eat 3 times a day. This allows the puppy to have small, frequent meals so that he can receive the required amount of nutrients, but without bingeing. After 6 months you can feed him 2 times a day.
- Adapt his meal times to your daily routine. For example, try feeding him at 7 a.m. before work, 1 p.m. on lunch break, and 8 p.m. after dinner.
- The amount of food you give your dog depends on his size and appetite. Follow the tips written on the package, or ask your vet for advice on how much a Bully should eat to be healthy.
- Bully puppies under 12 weeks need four meals a day. If you have a very small Bully puppy, consult your vet to establish an optimal feeding schedule.
Step 2. Give him fresh water to drink with each meal
Avoid leaving a large bowl full of water all day. Conversely, change the water in the bowl with each meal. This way your puppy will stay hydrated and won't run the risk of ingesting any insects or bacteria that have accumulated in the bowl during the day.
You should continue to follow these habits even after your puppy is an adult
Step 3. Limit the amount of food if your dog is overweight
Unlike the leaner breeds, the American Bully tends to become overweight if left unattended around food. If your schedule doesn't allow you to feed him 3 times a day, you can leave the food he needs in the bowl throughout the day. However, if you notice that instead of building muscle mass, she is gaining weight, try to limit her access to food.
- For example, you can give him copious amounts of food at 7 in the morning and again at 7 in the evening.
- The dog's metabolism changes after the first year of age. At that point, you may observe that the dog gains weight instead of gaining muscle mass.
Warnings
- Unlike other dog breeds, it is very important to give your American Bully puppy high quality food. Otherwise there is a risk that the dog will not develop properly and may have health problems as an adult.
- Although many Bully owners give their dogs raw meat, this practice is discouraged by many veterinarians, including those of the American Veterinarians Association. Raw food exposes the dog to risk of infection and could negatively affect its nutritional balance, which can lead to developmental deficiencies.
- Never give the puppy - or the adult Bully - steroids to increase their muscle mass. This practice exposes him to severe health risks.
