Socks are only apparently a small element of our wardrobe: in reality they are a necessity. They have different functions: they keep us warm, protect the feet, absorb sweat and can be used to give a touch of elegance to our clothing. They can be of different styles and materials, such as cotton, silk, polyester, acrylic, or a combination of these. Regardless of their function, properly folding the socks makes them last longer. There are several ways to accomplish this.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Fold them back from the cuffs
Step 1. To learn how to fold socks, start with the most common and simplest method
This is a great technique for any type of socks, especially casual ones, and it's also easy for kids to learn.
- Start by looking for a pair of matching socks to fold.
- Lay them out on a flat surface, such as a table or ironing board.
- Place them one on top of the other making them fit together to the point that they look like a single sock, if you look from the side. Match the parts of the toes, heels and cuffs.
Step 2. Flatten them
Run your hand over the fabric to remove any creases: this will make the result more orderly.
- Grab the cuff of one sock and fold it over the other.
- Pull the folded part down until you reach the desired length.
Step 3. Keep practicing
Fold a couple more if you want to get faster - the more you train, the easier the process will be.
- Continue practicing with different types of socks.
- This method is especially useful if you keep your socks in a deep drawer and have a lot of space to spare.
Method 2 of 4: Fold them back from the cuffs neatly
Step 1. Learn a slightly more advanced technique
This method works excellently for most socks and produces a more compact and tidy effect.
- Look for a pair of matching socks.
- Lay them out on a flat, stable surface.
- Place them on top of each other and align them perfectly, so that, if you turn them on one side, they look like a single sock.
- This time the heels should be positioned upwards and the toe area should point towards you. Appianale.
Step 2. Fold the cuff back towards the toe part for one third of the length of the sock
Smooth out the socks further with your hand: it may be a bit difficult, if your heels are naturally protruding.
- Now grab the part of the fingers and fold again for a third of the length towards the other folded end: the two parts should overlap slightly.
- Just open the elastic above the cuff and slip the socks inside.
- Flatten them again until the final product is flat and square in shape.
Step 3. Repeat the process until you get the hang of it
It's a method that takes more practice, but it's worth it - it will help prevent your elegant socks from stretching or losing their shape.
- Use this technique to fold all the socks you own.
- If the drawer you are storing them in is narrow or you use a drawer divider, this will make things more tidy.
- Socks folded in this way are easier to organize by color and style.
Method 3 of 4: Fold the Crossed Socks
Step 1. Learn the neatest technique for folding socks, which is particularly suitable for knee-high socks and socks
The final product will have a very neat square shape that does not stretch the cuffs and will help you keep the drawer particularly tidy.
- Always start with a pair of matching socks.
- Lay them out on a stable, flat surface.
- Smooth them out with your hands so that there are no wrinkles.
Step 2. Place them on top of each other to form a cross
The heel of the underlying sock must face upwards, while the overlying sock should cross the other in the middle.
- Grab the lower sock on the finger side and fold it over the other, so that the cross now has the shape of a T. Insert the protruding portion under the other sock.
- Now grab the cuff of the sock below and fold it as much as possible over the other.
- Begin folding the stretched sock by bringing the part of the fingers above the square just formed and inserting any part that protrudes inside.
- Then fold back the cuff part.
- Turn the square of socks formed in this way and insert the cuffs that still protrude inside, then flatten it.
Step 3. Do some practice
This technique compensates for the time spent learning it: it will not only help you keep your socks longer, but will make storing them and finding them in the drawer a breeze.
- Practice makes perfect and in this case you will get perfectly folded socks.
- This method is also great for arranging socks in drawer dividers.
- Once you start using this technique, accidental rips and elongated cuffs will become a thing of the past.
Method 4 of 4: Roll them up with the Military Style
Step 1. Roll up the socks when packing
It is a perfect method for any type of socks, especially tubular socks, and saves a lot of space.
- As always, get a pair of matching socks.
- Lay them out on a flat surface such as a table or ironing board.
- Arrange them one on top of the other and spread them out with your hands.
- Line them up so that, if you turn them sideways, they look like a single sock - that is, make the toes, heels and cuffs perfectly match.
Step 2. Begin to fold them by slightly tucking the cuff of the sock above inside
Move it down and inside with respect to the other sock by a couple of centimeters.
- Begin rolling the socks from the toe side, making sure you roll them tightly.
- Continue until you reach the top: the tighter the roll, the more compact and tidy the socks will be.
- When you are finished, insert a finger inside the outer cuff and wrap it over and around the rolled up socks, inserting any flaps inside.
- Eventually the socks will look like little rolls.
Step 3. Repeat the process several times and with different types of socks
The hardest part is rolling them up tightly and keeping them aligned.
- From this moment on you will be able to store them even in the smallest spaces.
- You will have more space available in your luggage to store other items.
- With this method it is easy to pack a pair of emergency socks for children.
