Generally, outdoor pools are equipped with underwater lighting. Just like with any headlight, the bulb could burn out and need to be replaced. There is no need to lower the water level of the pool to replace it. Here are some steps you can take to change a swimming pool lighthouse.
Steps
Step 1. Turn off all power to the pool lighting
You can do this through the electrical panel. Some pools are equipped with their own switchboard
Step 2. Check to make sure there is no power by trying to turn on the pool lights
- Not sure about this step … If the lighthouse has burned out, it won't light up anyway.
- Make sure the pump doesn't turn on if you only have one spot in the pool.
Step 3. Remove the single screw on the top of the stand
This may be a slotted screw, but more likely it will be a Phillips screw, so you will need a suitable screwdriver
Step 4. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the headlight holder and detach it from the niche
Normally, the holder will have a tab on the top. Work on it with the flathead screwdriver
Step 5. Pull the light holder to the floor out of the pool
There should be an abundant cord, coiled into the niche, which will allow you to lift the stand and move it to the floor
Step 6. Unscrew or pry the lens out of the holder
Older pool models will come with screws that you will need to remove to remove the lens. Newer pool lights will more likely have tabs that you will need to pry on
Step 7. Replace the old bulb with a new one by screwing it in place
Step 8. Turn on the power temporarily to test the headlight and make sure it works
Only turn on the light long enough to make sure it works. A second or two will be enough
Step 9. Turn off the power
Step 10. Replace the lens and reassemble the holder
Step 11. Replace all screws and lock all tabs
Step 12. Test the mount for leaks by submerging it for a few minutes before reattaching it to the headlight niche
Step 13. Put the holder back in the headlight niche and screw in the screw on the top
Step 14. Restore the electricity to the pool lighting and turn on the light to make sure it is working properly
Advice
- Place towels near the area you're working in to put the lens on so it won't break or get damaged.
- It will be helpful to have another person to help you with the procedure.
Warnings
- After replacing the bulb, be sure not to bump it or drop it. The filament in the bulb is fragile and could break.
- Do not reattach the lens when testing the replacement bulb. Leaving the lens unplugged will allow the heat to dissipate and the lens itself will not crack.
- Do not attempt to change the bulb until you are absolutely certain that the pool lighting circuit is disconnected.
- If the lens has tabs, be careful not to damage the waterproof gasket when you take the lens out.
