An essential oil diffuser is an excellent opportunity to improve the smell of a room, as well as to benefit from some positive effects of aromatherapy. There are several types of speakers, but they are all equally easy to use. Fill the appliance up to the maximum permitted level using the right amount of oil and check it while it is running for the best result.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Using an Electric Diffuser
Step 1. Place the speaker approximately in the center of the room
These devices nebulize a fine vapor that diffuses the oil throughout the environment. Place the diffuser in the center of the chosen room to ensure that the oil is evenly distributed within it. Keep it on a flat surface to avoid leaking liquid or any pieces while the appliance is in operation.
- Place a towel under the diffuser to catch any excess water during operation. If the towel remains dry after the first few uses, it probably means that it is not necessary.
- In the event that the appliance is connected to the mains, you will need an electrical outlet nearby.
Step 2. Lift the speaker cover
While the models may be slightly different from each other, most of them should have a lid that can be lifted to check the tank. Try unscrewing, uncorking or simply lifting the top of the appliance to open it and have access to the internal water tank.
- If you are not sure how to open it, check the instruction booklet for specific directions related to your model.
- Some models may have two lids that must be removed to access the tank: one is usually decorative, while the other serves to block excess steam. If removing the cover of the diffuser, you notice an internal box instead of the tank, remove the latter as well.
Step 3. Fill the diffuser with water at room temperature
Fill a small dispenser or glass with room temperature or fresh water and gently pour it into the tank or the internal tray of the appliance. Check if there is a line or an indicator inside that indicates how much water you need to pour.
- Instead of having a line or an indicator, many devices have a dispenser that contains the exact amount of water for the tank. In this case, fill the latter and pour the water into the tray.
- Ambient temperature means approximately 21 ° C. Dip a finger in the water to check its temperature, checking that it is slightly cool, but not cold.
Step 4. Pour 3 to 10 drops of essential oil into the diffuser
Unscrew the cap of the essential oil bottle you have chosen and pour it directly into the water tank. It may be necessary to gently shake the bottle, after which the drops should begin to descend into the water. Drop about 6-7 drops before resealing the bottle.
- You can combine different essential oils, but remember to pour a maximum of 10 drops inside the diffuser. Use only a few drops of each oil of your choice to prevent the aroma from being too strong when you turn on the diffuser.
- Keep track of how many drops you use each time, so you get an idea of how many you need: for a small room 3 or 4 should be enough. Start with a few drops and increase the quantity until you are satisfied with the aroma.
Step 5. Replace the diffuser cover and turn on the device
Close the tank, making sure it is well positioned; insert the plug into the socket and turn on the appliance to make it work.
Some speakers may have different settings or lights to change their operation. Check the instruction booklet if you don't know how your appliance works or to see how to use the advanced settings
Method 2 of 4: Using a Candle Diffuser
Step 1. Place the speaker in a passageway in the room
As the water begins to evaporate thanks to the candle, the diffuser will begin to release the aroma of the oil you have chosen. Place it in a place where the movement of people or a light breeze help spread the aroma. Keep it on a flat surface, in a passage or central area of the room for a better result.
The movement of people will help spread the oil, but it will also increase the likelihood that the diffuser will be overturned. Make sure you keep it in a safe place first
Step 2. Fill the container with water
Fill a glass or a measuring cup with water and pour it into the saucer placed on top of the diffuser. Some models may have a line or an indicator that helps you understand how much water to pour inside. If this does not apply to your model, fill it up to about halfway, to limit the possibility of water escaping.
- Always consult the instruction booklet for specific information about your speaker.
- Make sure you pour in the water first, before adding the oil.
Step 3. Add 2 to 4 drops of essential oil to the water
Unscrew the cap of the bottle of oil you have chosen and turn it over above the diffuser to start pouring a few drops inside. Pour in 2-3, then close the bottle.
- Combine different oils for a more complete aroma, avoiding using more than 4 drops in total.
- The amount of oil needed will vary based on the size of the room. Start with a few drops and continue increasing the amount until you are satisfied with the result.
- Keep track of how many drops of oil you use each time to get an idea of how many you need: 3-4 should be enough for a small room. Start with a small amount and work your way up until you are happy with the result.
Step 4. Place a candle inside the diffuser and light it
Place a small one (a candle or something similar) in the space under the saucer for the water and use a match or a long candle lighter to light it. Leave it on for 3-4 hours to spread the oil in the room.
- Keep an eye on the diffuser during operation, to make sure the candle does not go out by itself.
- Once most of the water in the saucer has evaporated, or the oil that you poured into it has run out, turn off the candle.
Method 3 of 4: Using a Reed Diffuser
Step 1. Place the speaker in the middle of the room or house
A stick diffuser is a passive way of diffusing essential oil within an environment, therefore it requires movement so that the aroma is spread all around. Place it in a passage and central area for a better result.
Try placing the diffuser near the main entrance of the room, so as to be greeted by a fresh breath of aroma every time you enter
Step 2. Pour the essential oil into the container
Most stick diffusers are equipped with a bottle of oil of the right density for the diffuser: pour it into the diffuser, being careful not to spill the oil out of the container.
- Unlike the other models, the stick diffuser does not allow you to easily switch between fragrances, so choose an oil that you like enough to be able to use it for a long time.
- There is no exact amount of oil to use in the diffuser: some people pour the entire bottle into it, others proceed a little at a time to keep the fragrance always fresh.
Step 3. Insert the sticks into the speaker
Group them together and gently place them inside the diffuser, then widen them so that they are separated from each other and that they point in different directions for a more uniform spread of the aroma. The oil will be absorbed slowly by the sticks and will slowly begin to fill the room with its scent.
- The more sticks you use, the stronger the fragrance will be: for a small room it is sufficient to use only 2 or 3.
- If the diffuser is full of oil, the oil may leak when you add the sticks: be careful when carrying out this operation or place it over the sink.
Step 4. Turn the sticks over to refresh the oil and aroma
After about a week you may notice that the aroma of the oil begins to fade. At this point, lift the sticks from the diffuser and turn them over, so that the end that was previously immersed in the oil is now facing up. This operation should refresh the aroma for another week or so, after which you will have to turn them over again.
It may be helpful to do this over a paper towel or sink to catch any oil drops
Method 4 of 4: Choose the Oil
Step 1. Use lemon essential oil for a fresh and citrusy aroma
It is one of the most popular oils for a number of products, including diffusers - use a few drops to fill your home with this citrusy fragrance. Some studies have even shown the benefits that this oil can have on mood or to reduce stress.
Use a combination of lemon, peppermint and rosemary for an energizing blend
Step 2. Opt for cinnamon for a freshly baked cake scent
Cinnamon oil has a sweeter and warmer aroma than lemon, making it perfect for the dark winter months. Use a few drops to make your home smell like baked cake.
Try combining orange, ginger and cinnamon oil for a perfect aroma for the Christmas period
Step 3. Choose lavender oil for a relaxing floral aroma
It is perhaps the most popular and common essential oil by virtue of its benefits. Use a few drops to give your home a fresh, floral fragrance, as well as to facilitate nighttime sleep.
Use a combination of lavender, grapefruit, lemon and mint for a great summer blend
Step 4. Opt for peppermint oil to keep you awake and active
Its strong but sweet smell will cool your home and may help keep you awake and focused. Use a few drops to fill the room with this fresh and pleasant scent.
Mix equal parts of peppermint and eucalyptus oil for an aroma that will help you treat sinusitis and breathe better
