An oil lamp is basically a candle without wax. It too includes a wick and a red-hot flame.
Steps
Step 1. Find a piece of cork
A wine bottle stopper is perfect, or you can purchase foil at a fine art store.
Step 2. Cut the cork so that it is flat on the bottom
(You could cut the cork of a wine bottle in half lengthwise, for example, or cut it twice so that it is 1/4 thick.)
Step 3. Use a needle or pin to pierce the cap
You could make the hole before cutting it, as the whole is more compact. And also use the hole already produced by the corkscrew, possibly widening it a bit.
Step 4. Insert a cotton thread so it looks like a wick
Sprinkle with wax to make it adhere well.
Step 5. Fill a glass or bowl 2/3 to 3/4 full of water
Step 6. Pour some cooking oil very slowly (olive oil is odorless) to obtain a layer on the water
Step 7. Place the cap on the oil
Step 8. Wait 15 minutes to allow the wick to soak before lighting
Advice
- Weave the yarn to give it a prettier look.
- To create an enchanting effect, pour food coloring into the water.
- You can easily make an oil lamp from a bottle by passing the wick through a hole made in the cap, but the bottle must be filled to the brim or sideways, for the aforementioned reason.
- Make sure that the wick is in contact with the oil - for example, if you were to put a lid on the oil, the wick should not be fixed on it.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when you light… just in case.
Warnings
- Turning it over could cause a fuel fire.
- Be careful when you turn it on!
