Plenty of women love to turn into a flapper girl on Halloween (or any occasion there's a chance to put on a nice fancy dress). But since buying a costume can be quite expensive, or it can be difficult to find the right size, here's a way to make a flapper-style dress from a simple tunic. It's easy, cheap and chic!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: The Dress
Step 1. Find a loose, comfortable tunic
Go to a used clothing store to find a simple, straightforward dress. If it's not perfect, you can always cut and adjust it to the length and style you like best. The fringes, then, will cover any imperfection!
- Knee length is best. It will allow you to perform the real flapper dance, because flapper girls have to dance!
- Try to arrange the tunic with thin or sleeveless straps. It can also have short sleeves if you prefer, but not long.
Step 2. Buy some strips of fringe to decorate the dress
Make sure you buy enough to cover the entire dress, both front and back.
Drape and pin the first band of fringes at the top of the dress. Measure the distance between where you want the second row of fringes to start and where you want the penultimate band of fringes to arrive. Divide this space for the fringe strips that you still need to sew. This will ensure that the fringes are arranged evenly
Step 3. Start sewing the dress
For the first strip, work the dress inside out - this will make the operation much easier. And it will be even easier if you use a sewing machine.
Try on the dress. If something doesn't satisfy you, fix it. While it will still take some time, it will be worth it
Method 2 of 2: The Accessories
Step 1. Create a headband
Buy a band of sequined fabric. It must be of a color that goes well with the tunic or with fringes. Take the measurement of the circumference of your head: since it will widen a little, it is better to make it slightly narrower, rather than wider.
- Cut to the desired length and join the ends with the all-over glue.
- Find the position you like best where to place the decorations. They can be a flower, some feathers, some jewelry, whatever you like. Put some hot glue on the decoration and stick it wherever you like. You can also pin the decoration on and let it dry.
Step 2. Match the perfect shoes
Mary Janes with high heels (block heels) are ideal. If you don't have them, any shoe that goes up the ankle will do (so the shoe won't fly off while you dance a Charleston).
Stiletto heels weren't very common at the time. And they're not comfortable for dancing either, so just consider them as a last resort, and if you're sure you don't trip
Step 3. Add other accessories
While not mandatory, a long string of pearls or a feather boa is a cute addition to your already playful outfit. Gloves and a long cigarette holder can also help you get more into flapper style.
Don't forget your makeup! Depending on the color of your dress, you may want to wear bright red lipstick. Do not be shy! You will still attract all the attention possible, so why not do it with an extra touch of style ?
Advice
- The hair can be curly (preferably short, or on the shoulders) or straight with a bob (a wig is also fine).
- For shoes, a pair of elegant ballet flats will work if you're not used to wearing heels.
- Bring a purse for whatever you need. Choose a small size.
