If you don't want to always buy new clothes for your little girl, why not make them? Clothes already used by older brothers are often old and worn, while new ones can be a little expensive. So, if you are a parent with multiple children, or if you just want to save money, making your little girl's clothes can be a good solution. This article will tell you how to make a simple baby girl dress. If you have a child, or want something other than a dress, you can find several patterns in haberdashery.
Steps
Step 1. Find the right fabric
Some fabrics can be found inexpensively, for example at your local haberdashery. You can find some on eBay, but it will take some time to get them home.
Step 2. Gather the materials
You should keep extra fabric, scissors, needles, tape measure and thread close to your work area.
Step 3. Get a large piece of fabric and a pair of scissors
Fold the fabric in half. Make sure the two parts are the same size! This is very important to avoid getting an asymmetrical dress!
Step 4. At the top, or where the crease is, cut out a slightly larger semicircle of your daughter's head
This will be the neck hole (where the baby's head will pass).
Step 5. Sew the sides together
You can use a sewing machine or, if you prefer, you can sew them by hand with needle and thread. Make sure you start where the separate ends are.
- Don't sew the sides to the end!
- Leave a space slightly larger than your daughter's arms for the sleeves.
Step 6. Great work
You made a baby girl dress.
Step 7. Try decorating the dress with beads and lace or using different fabrics to make it more colorful
Advice
- It will be helpful if you take a few steps before starting.
- If you want to make the sleeves, take some extra fabric scraps, fold them, sew them, and then sew them to the dress. Also make sure they are the right size. The sleeves need to be slightly wider than your daughter's arms.
- For some fun, add some lace and fabric paint. If your daughter is old enough, she can also help you with that!
- Keep the baby close to you when making the cuts to check the measurements.
Warnings
- Do not leave materials unattended. Your children could get hurt by playing with them.
- Be careful with your sewing machine, needles and thread! Don't get hurt.
- Never let a small child help with cutting and sewing. If your child wants to help you, they should be at least 11 or 12 years old. If it's smaller, get help with the decorations.
