Summer is approaching, do you want a new swimsuit but you can't afford it or do you want something unique? Whatever the reason, WikiHow suggests you how to make yourself a new swimsuit. In this article you will find several models to make with little experience and simple materials. Start with Method 1 below or click directly on the sections listed above.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: T-kini costume
Step 1. Cut a shirt
Cut the side seams and the shoulders and you get four parts: the front, back, and two sleeves. Then cut the hem of the shirt. Take the front of the shirt and cut four 4 cm high strips from the bottom.
Step 2. Cut the top
Using the front of the shirt, place the bra of a swimsuit you already have as a template at the top of the shirt. If you don't have a bra to use as a template, just cut the shirt horizontally about 4 or 5 cm below the armpit. Now you need to make the shape of the bra. Choose the model you prefer, just remember to leave at least 5 cm of fabric under the armpit.
Step 3. Cut the briefs
Use the back of the shirt and place an old bikini model or an old pair of briefs as model and size.
Step 4. Cut the side strips
Cut the side strips for the briefs using the sleeves. Check that the height of the strips is the same as the briefs you just cut and on which you will have to sew them. If you want, you can also use different fabrics to make the side straps and shoulder straps, it depends on the imagination and the material available.
Step 5. Secure the side straps
Sew the side strips you cut for the briefs. Next, sew the long strips you cut from the front of the shirt for the back closure and bra straps of your T-kini.
Step 6. Here is your new swimsuit
You did! Buckle up your T-kini and enjoy the sun!
Method 2 of 4: A Sexy One Piece Swimsuit
Step 1. Get a pair of leggings
Get a pair of leggings in any color and your size. The best material is cotton or elastane.
Step 2. Cut the legs
Cut off the legs of the leggings. You can cut them a bit long to create a 50s style model, or higher. Remember to leave at least 2 cm for the hem. Be careful not to cut them too short!
Step 3. Make the hem
Hem the bottom you just cut (legs).
Step 4. Sew the legs
Cut the leg pieces (which you cut from the leggings) until they reach the back of the neck from the waistband of the leggings, leaving a 2 cm seam allowance at both ends. Sew the widest part of the legs to the front edge of the leggings, leaving an opening in the middle. Then create the swimsuit fastening behind your neck.
Step 5. Sew the legs
Join the two ends of the legs, behind the neck. Make a kind of ring where you will put your head to put on the costume.
Step 6. Enjoy your new costume
Put on your new swimsuit and have fun in the sun !!
Method 3 of 4: Crisscross Costume
Step 1. Get a tank top
Get a tank top or bodice. The more elastic the fabric, the better.
Step 2. Cut the back
Use a seam ripper to remove side seams up to approximately 10cm below the armpit. Then, cut the back below this line, leaving the front intact.
Step 3. Cut in the center
Cut straight in the center of the front, from the bottom edge to about 10cm from the neck line.
Step 4. Put on the top
Insert your arms into the openings, cross the sides of the front panels, and then tie the ends back.
Step 5. Purchase or make the slip
You can purchase the briefs to match your new top (many stores sell them separately) or you can follow the instructions and make a T-kini as illustrated in a previous section.
Step 6. Put on your new costume and have fun in the sun
Method 4 of 4: Classic Swimsuit
Step 1. Purchase the fabric and accessories
Use lycra or microfiber fabric, a sewing machine and machine thread and needles that can sew the fabric of the swimsuit (special needles and threads are required).
Step 2. Use or draw the template
You can buy a pattern or find a free one online or alternatively use an old swimsuit as a pattern.
Step 3. Cut the fabric
Cut the fabric based on your pattern. Make sure you leave allowances for the seams. Depending on the model chosen, different elements will be needed. For a one-piece swimsuit you usually need two fabric panels, to which you can add gussets for the hips and the crotch.
Step 4. Hem
Hem the neck, arm holes and leg holes. If you have chosen to make a one-piece swimsuit, do not hem the sides. These will be merged later.
Step 5. Sew the sides together
Place the front and back panels right sides together and baste them together. Then, after checking that the size is right, sew the panels together, joining the crotch as well.
Step 6. That's it
Your new swimsuit is finished. Wear it and enjoy the sun!
