In this article, you will be shown how to set up an igloo tent, one of the most common and popular types of tents. The need for a tent may arise in the most disparate situations and acquire familiarity and speed in assembling the various parts as well as in the choice of place and environmental conditions, it can represent a great advantage in situations of relative difficulty (lack of light, adverse weather conditions, etc.). Go to step 1 now to learn how to set up an igloo tent.
Steps
Step 1. Choose a large, open space
To choose a suitable place to pitch a tent, consider:
- wind direction; place the tent with the openings facing the main winds and with your back to the prevailing wind.
- the possibility of using a row of trees or bushes as a natural barrier to protect you from the wind.
- the choice of a place in the shade if it is hot.
- avoiding dry river beds and streams, which are dangerous in the event of sudden rains and floods.
- avoid trees that are known to fall easily as a suitable place for camping.
- to keep the sleeping area away from the cooking and toilet area; better if above them.
Step 2. Take out all of the tent components
Check that all the pieces are present and that the zips are all closed.
Step 3. Begin to assemble the inner part with the mosquito net
If the inside of the tent needs to be attached to the waterproof outer fabric, do so now (not all igloo tents need this).
Step 4. If you intend to put a waterproof sheet (tarpaulin) under the tent, spread it out and mount the various components on top of it
Step 5. Mount the poles
The posts are connected to each other through one or more rubber bands (depending on the shape of the structure); unfold them and put them in their place, ready to use.
Step 6. Take the first post and attach it to the next by sliding it into the slot (tube) through the opposite side
It is always better (and easier) to push the posts along the slots rather than pull them; in fact, by pulling them, you risk moving them from their median position and causing them to get stuck inside the slots.
Similarly, in the same way, connect and mount the rest of the poles
Step 7. There are slots on each side of the tent to slide the respective poles into them
Pass all the stakes through them.
Step 8. Attach the ends of the poles to their respective places on the corners of the tent and thread them firmly into the fasteners (usually nylon tapes) located on the corners and bottom edges of the tent
This operation puts tension on the whole curtain and keeps it well pulled.
Step 9. Secure the inside of the tent to the ground
Using the pegs, tighten the outer lines tightly. Insert the pegs in the ground always tilting them in the opposite direction to the tent; in this way it will be more difficult (compared to when they are fixed vertically) for the wind to lift them and carry them away.
Step 10. Secure the outside of the tent to the ground
If you haven't previously attached it to the inside, place it on top of it and then pin it to the ground. Check that you have correctly attached the two parts to each other before fixing the outer one with pegs.
Step 11. You have set up the tent
Collect all the pegs that you have not used and put them back in their pouch; put the bag of pegs in the bag of the tent and put the latter inside the tent for easy retrieval.
Advice
- Push the posts through the slots. Never pull them in in reverse as even one of them could break inside and it could be really difficult to get it out again.
- If you put a stake in the wrong place and need to remove it, use another stake to easily pull it out of the ground.
- Spread the curtain fabric horizontally so that the poles can pass through it easily.
Warnings
- Don't step on the posts if you don't want to break them.
- Be careful not to scratch the curtain fabric with any pointed or sharp objects to avoid tearing it.
