You can also make a smoke bomb at home, as it's a simple project to make that doesn't take a lot of time. The formula described in this article produces a colored smoke cloud. Blue and orange dyes work best, but you can use whatever color you like.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Prepare the Blend
Step 1. Mix 60g of potassium nitrate with 40g of sugar
Pour the mixture into a saucepan and heat it over low heat. If you have no way of measuring grams, then you can use the spoon as a reference. Specifically, mix three tablespoons of potassium nitrate with two of sugar.
Be very careful when mixing chemicals, always take proper precautions
Step 2. "Cook" the mixture
Stir it constantly as it warms over low heat and wait for the sugar to caramelize and turn brown. It will take less than 15 minutes, so never lose sight of the mixture.
We remind you once again to take all safety measures during cooking and not to leave the mixture unattended
Step 3. When it's ready, you can take the mixture off the heat
When the consistency and appearance are similar to that of honey, then you can turn off the heat and remove the mixture from the stove: it must be creamy and thick.
Step 4. Incorporate the baking soda
Once the mixture is off the heat, add a heaping teaspoon of baking soda, in this case it is not necessary to be precise with the dose.
Baking soda triggers a chemical reaction, so you need to be very careful at this stage
Step 5. Add the dye
Take three heaping spoonfuls of dye of your choice and mix them with the mixture in the saucepan; incorporate it evenly. To facilitate the operation, you should have prepared the dose of dye in advance and poured it into a separate container.
Part 2 of 2: Building the Smoke Bomb
Step 1. Fill a cardboard tube
When the mixture is still very hot and malleable, pour it into the tube. It should run like hot caramel; fill the tube completely up to the top edge.
At this stage you must proceed with caution because the mixture is hot. Wear heat-resistant gloves if you have them available. Keep the tube away from anything that could cause the compound to ignite
Step 2. Slip a pen into the mixture
Take a ballpoint pen and slide it straight into the center of the tube; it doesn't have to reach the bottom of the smoke bomb, but it does have to go deep enough so that it stands upright by itself. Wait at least an hour for the mixture to cool and harden.
Step 3. Replace the ballpoint pen
Remove it from the bomb and insert the fireworks fuse in its place. You can use a piece of cotton wool to fit the fuse well into the hole. Make sure you have at least two inches of fuse on the outside so you can set off the bomb.
The fuse itself is not dangerous until it catches fire. In any case, be careful and keep it away from open flames
Step 4. Wrap the bomb
Use heavy duty tape to cover the bottom, sides, and top of the cardboard tube. The tape can have the color you prefer; remember to leave a small hole on the top to house the fuse.
Step 5. Light the bomb
Use a lighter to set your smoke bomb on fire. Do this outdoors because the smoke will come out in large clouds very quickly as soon as the fuse has burned out sufficiently.
