Fully recovering from a vasectomy is a process that can often take a month or more. As with any surgery, the first few days are the hardest. Vasectomy is a surgical procedure that prevents sperm from entering the sperm. The surgery, which is sometimes done in the doctor's office, takes about 30 minutes. Be prepared to have some pain and swelling for some time.
Steps
Step 1. Support the scrotum
You should leave the bandage placed by the doctor on your scrotum for a period of 48 hours after surgery. It is also a good idea to wear tight-fitting underwear.
Step 2. Keep your physical activity level to a minimum after surgery
Rest for at least a 24 hour period. Once a couple of days have passed, you can resume moderate physical activity. However, avoid any heavy exercise, such as weight lifting and sport at full capacity, for about a week.
Step 3. Apply an ice pack to control pain and swelling
For the first two days, ice the scrotum area for about 20 minutes every hour.
Step 4. Do not take blood-thinning medications for up to 7 days after vasectomy
They increase the risk of postoperative bleeding.
Step 5. Do not swim or bathe for 2-3 days after surgery
Depending on the technique your doctor uses, you may have stitches on your scrotum. To prevent an infection from developing, you should keep the stitches dry. When showering, use antibacterial soap.
Step 6. Refrain from all types of sexual activity for a period of approximately 7 days
- Wait for your doctor's consent before resuming sexual activity. Ejaculating too quickly after a vasectomy could cause pain and you may notice blood in the semen.
- Use birth control pills for at least a few weeks after surgery. It takes a long time for the sperm to no longer be present in the sperm.
Step 7. Call the doctor who performed the surgery immediately, if you notice symptoms of infection
These symptoms may include fever, blood or pus coming out of the operated area and / or worsening of pain and swelling.
