The containment appliance is a custom-made orthodontic device designed to keep the teeth in the right position following the removal of the orthodontic appliance. Inserting it correctly into the oral cavity allows you to preserve the results obtained by wearing the appliance, making sure that the teeth maintain an adequate position. There are two types of containment devices: the Hawley plate and the Essix, or the transparent mobile restraint. Both can be used on the upper or lower arch. There is also a third type, namely fixed restraint or splinting. However, as it only needs to be inserted and removed by the dentist, there is no need to worry about it.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Place the Hawley Plate

Step 1. Determine if you have a Hawley plaque

This type of containment device is composed of a plastic part and a metal wire. The plastic part is modeled on the oral cavity and is inserted continuously into the palate. The metal part should instead adhere to the front row of the teeth (usually the six front teeth) and is anchored to the back teeth with a hook so that it also grips this area.

Step 2. Grasp the appliance correctly

First you need to know if the appliance goes on the upper or lower arch. The plastic arch in the center should be pointed up or down in relation to the arch it will hold in place. Make sure that the wire is pointed towards the outside of your mouth instead.

Step 3. Place the appliance in your mouth

Make sure you bring it closer to the correct dental arch. Do not hold it in this position for too long. This is just a quick step to make sure you can fully push and fix it in one go.

Don't exert too much force, or you risk hurting your gums if you don't insert it right. Check your position in a mirror by keeping your mouth wide open

Step 4. Push the braces onto your teeth

Do this immediately after inserting it into the oral cavity. Make sure that the plastic arch fits snugly against the roof of the mouth, that the wire on the front fits snugly against the front teeth, and that the hooks on the back are snug against the back teeth. If the braces don't fit your teeth properly, call your dentist or orthodontist. You may need to modify the wire that adheres to the teeth or the plastic part that adheres to the roof of the mouth.

Step 5. Firmly secure the appliance to the back teeth

If necessary, push it with your fingers to place it. Don't bite it to fix it, or you run the risk of it getting damaged. You should hear a click the moment it is fixed. If it falls or does not stay in place, it may not be properly anchored or you may need to contact your dentist or orthodontist to adjust it.

Method 2 of 2: Place an Essix Containing Appliance

Step 1. Determine if you have an Essix containment appliance

This appliance is a transparent plastic mold that reproduces the shape of the patient's teeth, without additional pieces or metal wires. It should cover the entire dental arch (upper or lower). Since it is manufactured using only thin plastic, it may warp or bend, preventing it from fitting properly to your teeth. If you used to fit it well and you are having trouble wearing it now, it may have to be changed or replaced by your dentist.

Step 2. Grasp the appliance correctly

You must first consider whether it should be placed on the upper or lower dental arch. Make sure the bow is facing forward and that the opening can be placed on the right teeth.

Step 3. Place the appliance in your mouth

Make sure you get it closer to the right dental arch. Don't hold it in this position for too long - it's just a quick step to make sure you can push and fix it in one go.

Step 4. Push the braces onto your teeth

Do this immediately after placing it in your mouth. The plastic should adhere well to the entire dental arch, without moving. Make sure the braces are gripping all of your teeth and holding them in the correct position, including your back teeth. If it falls or moves, it is likely that it has not been fixed in the right way.

Remember not to eat with the brace, otherwise you risk breaking it or hurting your jaw

Advice

  • There are only two types of mobile containment appliances. The fixed containment appliance must not be removed. If it does remove, see your dentist as soon as possible to have it placed again.
  • Remember to wear the braces for as long as your dentist tells you. Otherwise he will not be able to do his job and the treatment will be prolonged further.
  • By having a foreign object in your mouth, you will produce more saliva. This is a normal annoyance that should go away within a few days.
  • The first few days it will be difficult to speak correctly, as you will have to get used to the presence of the device. There are exercises, such as reading aloud, that can help you adapt faster.
  • The containment appliance is specifically designed for each patient's teeth. If it doesn't fit well, is painful, or cuts into your mouth, take it to your dentist so he can adjust it.
