Sometimes, you just can't do without it. If absolutely necessary, you can learn how to do it civilly and cleanly. Learn when, where and how to expectorate correctly.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Expectoration with Education
Step 1. Expel phlegm from your mouth only when absolutely necessary
Do it as cleanly as possible so you don't annoy others around you. Normally this need arises when you have a cold, chew tobacco or are subjected to the strain of physical work.
- Never do this indoors unless you are using a vessel of some kind. In this case, as happens in wine tasting or when chewing tobacco, it is important to keep the container hidden. No one in the library will want to sit next to an empty water bottle filled with a brown liquid. Put it away.
- Don't make it a habit to spit for no reason, even if you're outdoors. The only times you should do this, especially in a civilized way, is when you are sick or feel badly needed.
Step 2. Expect in a bowl when you can
There is nothing to do: spitting is an unpleasant gesture. To make it less disgusting, avoid doing it in places where people are able to see it. If you are indoors, spit into the toilet and flush the toilet. If you are outdoors, spit into a handkerchief and put it away. If you are at a tasting or chewing tobacco, spit into a suitable container, such as a bottle or can, and discard it.
Sometimes, when you work outdoors, it is not possible to expectorate using a handkerchief, and not very practical either. If so, move away from where you are working and expel the phlegm away from the passage of people. If it's particularly unpleasant, cover it with some earth using your foot
Step 3. Never expectorate in areas where there is traffic
Whether you are indoors or outdoors, it is rude to spit on the ground where someone could walk barefoot, risking to step on what you expelled. Don't do this, but if you can't restrain yourself, make sure you do it out of the way of people.
If you play sports and spit inside the playing field, it is sometimes advisable to step on the grass so that no one runs the risk of falling on the phlegm you hunted
Step 4. Try to be quick
Spitting is a social taboo and many consider it a disgusting habit. If you can't do without it, do it quickly and quietly. Calling attention to oneself while spitting is a disrespectful gesture in many cultures. Try to do this quickly and subtly, without too much foreplay or moaning.
Part 2 of 3: Expectorate
Step 1. Collect the saliva with the tongue towards the front of the mouth
It's not a good idea to make a mess, so it's important to prepare first. Collect the phlegm or saliva that you are going to expel on the tip of the tongue and get rid of it. Squeeze your cheeks towards your teeth so that everything is gathered in one place.
Step 2. Pucker your lips
The lips should be curled to prevent sputum from coming out or having an unpleasant kickback. Nobody likes phlegm going in the opposite direction. To keep it focused and ward off some mess, curl your lips when you get ready. Bow your cheeks and pursue your lips.
Step 3. Forcefully push the sputum out of the mouth
Try not to let the saliva out. Eject all at once. Take a deep breath and clear your mouth as quickly as possible. If you do it right, you should hunt it all together.
Step 4. Arch your neck back and snap forward
If you want to throw the sputum some distance away, you need to arch your neck and throw your shoulders back. When you dash forward, throw the phlegm and see how far it goes. Be very careful where you point.
Generally, it is best to spit on the ground as close as possible to prevent it from becoming an overly unpleasant gesture. Bend at the waist towards your vessel and expectora
Part 3 of 3: Knowing When to Throw Out Saliva or Other
Step 1. Spit at someone's feet to insult them
In some cultures, and especially in baseball, it is common to spit on the ground near someone's feet when you want to insult them. It is a common way of expressing disgust.
However, it is an offensive gesture. Therefore, it can be provocative and aggressive, but it also risks aggravating an already rather tense situation. Be very careful if you are ever tempted to do this
Step 2. Don't spit on your hand to close a deal
Sometimes, on television there is the scene of two men who, flaunting virility, each spit on their hand before shaking it to "seal a pact". It is a gesture born in the context of pop culture, not a tradition shared by every culture. If you've just bought a house and want to close a deal with the real estate agent, shake his hand as normal. It is not necessary to spit.
Step 3. Eject the wine into a vessel during a tasting
To avoid consuming too much alcohol during a wine tasting, it is traditional to discard the wine in a particular container every time a little is tasted. Often, in fact, spittoons are made available during professional tastings, but they may also not be provided. Therefore, if you prefer to eliminate it, locate a container before putting the wine in your mouth and do not spit it on the ground.
If you are planning to taste only a few varieties of wine, you can safely drink it. Just decide in advance who will drive the car
Step 4. Discard the tobacco-soaked saliva in a bowl
To avoid leaving smudges of saliva mixed with tobacco on pavements and other surfaces, you can take a jar, bottle or container with you to spit in, preferably hidden. It is a good idea to expel tobacco into a container even when you are outdoors.
Old-fashioned spittoons were first introduced to control the spread of tuberculosis and other communicable diseases, spread through contact with bodily fluids. They are still common tools in some public buildings, including the United States Senate
Step 5. Spit on the ground to ward off bad omens
In Northern India and elsewhere it is thought that spitting on the ground removes the possibility of bad omens occurring. If you are superstitious and see a black cat crossing the street, a bird flying into the house, or you find yourself walking under a ladder, consider spitting gracefully, without making too much noise. You will drive away bad luck.
