The traditional French toast recipe involves eggs, milk and bread. However, if you are lactose intolerant or follow a vegetarian diet, you need a variant. Fortunately, there are several recipes to prepare it without animal products. Steps
Method 1 of 3: Milk Free French Toast
Step 1. Cut the bread into thick slices
The doses of this recipe allow you to prepare a batter sufficient for 4 slices with a thickness of 3 cm or 6 with a thickness of 2.
Step 2. Beat the eggs, vanilla, sugar and cinnamon
Break the eggs into a shallow dish, then beat them with a whisk - they should turn a light yellow, without streaks. Add the vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon, then continue whisking.
Step 3. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat
If you don't have a non-stick pan, grease a regular pan with 1 tablespoon (15 g) of butter or coconut oil. It should be hot enough to sizzle if it comes into contact with a drop of water.
Step 4. Dip a slice of bread into the batter
Dip one side at a time. Keep the slice in the batter for a few seconds to let it soak well. Let the excess drip onto the plate before proceeding.
Step 5. Place the bread in the pan and let it cook, allowing for 2-4 minutes per side
Turn it over with a spatula. It should become golden and crunchy.
If the pan is large, you could cook 2 slices at a time, but make sure they don't touch each other
Step 6. Plate the toast and proceed with cooking the other slices
If necessary, re-grease the pan with butter or coconut oil. Cover the finished toast with a clean tea towel to keep it warm.
Step 7. Serve the dairy-free French toast
Serve it as it is, or garnish it with sliced bananas or fresh berries. You can also sprinkle it with maple syrup.
Method 2 of 3: French Toast Without Milk and Derivatives
Step 1. Cut the bread into 2 cm thick slices
For this recipe, stale bread, one day old, is preferable. The drier it is, the better the final result will be!
Step 2. Beat the eggs in a shallow bowl:
you should get a light yellow homogeneous mixture, without streaks. You can do this with a whisk or a hand blender.
Step 3. Mix the coconut milk, sugar, vanilla extract and salt
Beat the ingredients with the whisk until you get a smooth consistency and color.
You can also add 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
Step 4. Heat a skillet over medium heat
A non-stick pan is preferable, but you can also use a regular pan by greasing it with 1 tablespoon (15 g) of coconut oil (or vegetable butter). The pan should be hot enough to sizzle on contact with a drop of water.
Step 5. Dip a slice of bread into the batter
Soak both sides well. Let the excess drip onto the bowl itself for a few seconds.
Step 6. Place the bread in the pan and cook it for 2-4 minutes per side
If it's large, you can add another slice as well, just make sure the edges don't touch. Let it cook for 2-4 minutes, then flip it with a spatula and wait another 2-4 minutes. You can serve it once it becomes golden and crunchy.
Step 7. Plate the toast and proceed with the preparation
The pan may start to dry out. If so, grease it again with coconut oil (or vegetable butter). Keep ready toast warm by covering it with a clean tea towel.
Step 8. Serve it as it is or garnish it as you like
Typically, maple syrup and / or vegetable butter are used, but you can also try toasted coconut or a sliced banana.
Method 3 of 3: Vegan French Toast
Step 1. Put the coconut milk in the fridge
If you are going to garnish your French toast with coconut milk cream, you must put the can in the fridge the night before, without shaking it, so that the cream and milk separate.
Step 2. Cut the bread into 3 cm thick slices
For best results, use day-old bread. If you prefer a smaller thickness, cut it to obtain slices of about 2 cm.
Step 3. Mix the banana, milk and spices until smooth
Peel the banana first, then place it in the blender jar. Add the almond milk, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Blend everything until you get a homogeneous and dense mixture.
- If it's too sweet for your taste, add half a teaspoon of salt.
- You can also do this by hand, but make sure there are no banana lumps left.
- If you don't have almond milk or don't like it, you can use other types of plant-based milk, such as coconut or soy milk.
Step 4. Pour the batter into a shallow dish, then dip a slice of bread in it
Soak both sides, until they are well impregnated. Let the excess drip onto the plate.
Step 5. Heat the coconut oil in a large skillet over medium heat
First, grease it with about 1 tablespoon (15 g) of coconut oil. Let the oil melt and the pan heat up. It must be hot enough to sizzle on contact with a drop of water.
Step 6. Place the toast in the pan and let it cook 3-4 minutes per side, turning it with a spatula
Serve it once it has become crisp and golden.
Step 7. Proceed with the preparation
Place a clean tea towel over the ready-to-eat slices to keep them warm. If the pan starts to dry out, add more oil to it before continuing.
Step 8. If you want, make coconut milk cream
Remove the can from the fridge and carefully remove the solidified cream with the help of a spoon, while leaving the liquid milk inside. Beat it for 30 seconds or until thick. You can do this with a mixer or a food processor equipped with a whisk.
- If you prefer it sweeter, add maple syrup or agave nectar.
- It's not a must, but coconut milk cream is a delicious topping for vegan French toast.
Step 9. Plate the French toast and garnish it with a dollop of cream, blueberries, raspberries and / or sliced strawberries
If you prefer not to use coconut milk cream, you can garnish the toast with maple syrup or agave nectar
