Sometimes it takes a while to learn how to use a can opener. If you've never used it before, it might seem like a pretty weird tool. However, with a little practice and some instruction, you will be able to open a jar before you even know it.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Manual Can Opener
Step 1. Understand the various parts that make up a can opener
While it may seem like a simple tool, it actually consists of three distinct pieces. The two long handles that are used to "grab" the rim of the jar are levers. The knob that you use to turn the jar is mounted on an axis and is connected to a wheel. Finally, the wheel that cuts the edge of the jar is called the cutting wheel.
The tin can was invented by an Englishman in the early 1800s. Some skill was required to open the first models and people used stones, chisels or knives to force them. Eventually, in 1858, the first can opener appeared, which greatly facilitated the work
Step 2. Open the two handles of the tool
Place the toothed wedge on the edge of the can. This will automatically align the cutting wheel with the circumference of the can. Close the handles by pressing them firmly. With a little practice you will be able to tell when you have positioned the can opener correctly.
Until you have acquired some familiarity, you will have to make several attempts
Step 3. Start turning the knob when you feel a firm grip of the tool on the jar
If you don't pay attention to this detail, the can opener may slip and come off. It is a sharp tool, so you have to be very careful. Turning the knob activates the cutting wheel which will begin to engrave the top surface of the can.
Step 4. Continue like this, turning the knob, until you have cut the entire circumference
By doing this, you engrave the seal of the jar by opening it along the entire top edge. When you have completed the whole round, the lid will automatically detach from the can opener. Throw away the metal disc carefully and enjoy the contents of your can.
Method 2 of 3: Electric Can Opener
Step 1. Lift the can opener head
Rest the jar against the top and back of the print head. Make sure that the edge of the can is between the cutting edge and the wheel.
Step 2. Lower the head once the can is in the correct position
This operation automatically activates the can opener and the can will start spinning. Support it as it rotates to prevent it from tipping over.
Step 3. Let the tool magnet attract the jar as the cut progresses
This will raise the lid slightly. Once the entire circumference has been engraved, you can lift the head of the appliance. Carefully unhook the jar.
Step 4. Remove the lid from the magnet
Grab it between your fingers without resting them on the cutting edge. Discard the lid and enjoy the contents of the can.
Method 3 of 3: Traditional Can Opener
Step 1. Be very careful and place the "blade" part of the can opener on the edge of the can, perpendicular to the surface
Then, applying a controlled force, push it down through the metal. With a little practice you will be able to perform this movement smoothly.
Some people really appreciate this type of can opener and prefer it to more modern models as well
Step 2. Proceed with caution during this operation
If you do not hold a firm grip on the jar or if the blade is not sharp enough, the tool may slip. In this case, if the can opener were tilted in a specific direction, it could cut you. Until you have practiced for a few times, it would be best to perform these operations under the supervision of someone experienced.
Step 3. Hold the can opener with the cutting edge facing down
Now insert the blade into the hole you just made and, this time, it needs to stay parallel and as close to the edge of the can as possible. Push the blade down again, but gently, to open another hole.
Step 4. Place one of the notches on the end of the can opener over the raised edge of the can
Raise and lower the blade in a swing motion, pivoting on the edge of the can to cut the lid around the circumference. Remember that the edge of the jar is very sharp, do not put your hands near it. Now that the jar is open, enjoy its contents.
Warnings
- Regardless of the type of can opener you use, the important thing is to have a steady hand, otherwise the tool blade could slip and injure you. If you feel unsure about what you are doing, ask someone to help you.
- Make sure the surface you are working on is solid.
