You can connect an iPod or MP3 player to the amplifier of almost any stereo system, using a standard aux cable and adapter. The amplifier boosts the signal of your portable device so that it can be reproduced with the speakers of the stereo.

Step 1. Find out what kind of amplifier you have

Almost all modern models have a standard RCA audio input on the back (similar to the white and red ones on televisions). Both of these connectors and the output connector of your iPod or MP3 player are 3.5mm in diameter, so they work with normal aux cables.

Some older models have 6.35mm inputs, compatible with quarter-inch headphone adapters. In this case you will not be able to use standard 3.5mm aux cables

Step 2. Purchase a 3.5mm male-to-male RCA cable if you don't already have one

You can find them on Amazon or in electronics stores for around € 5. This cable allows you to connect an MP3 player or iPod to the "right" and "left" inputs on the rear of the amplifier.

If you have an amplifier with 6.5mm inputs, purchase a 3.5mm aux cable and 3.5-6.35mm adapter. You can also find the latter on Amazon, at a price of around € 4

Step 3. Connect the 6.35mm adapter to the 3.5mm cable, if the amplifier requires it

The RCA-3.5mm cable that you will use for more modern models should be pre-assembled instead.

Step 2. Connect the other side of the cable to the audio input of the amplifier

Although the input port varies by device model and style, it will normally consist of two 3.5mm holes, one white and one red, the same color as the RCA cable. It should also say "AUX-IN". If you don't see the "AUX" port, try plugging the cable into the "CD" or "VCR" inputs.

  • If your amplifier has the 6.35mm input, you'll need to plug the larger side of the cable into the headphone jack, which is usually on the front of the device.
  • Make sure you plug the cable into an input port and not an output port.
