This article explains how to connect a computer running Windows 8 to a Wi-Fi network.
Steps
Step 1. Make sure your computer is equipped with a wireless network card
Most modern laptops have a built-in wireless adapter that allows you to connect your computer to a Wi-Fi network. However, many desktop systems are not equipped with this type of peripheral.
If your desktop computer does not support Wi-Fi, you will need to purchase and install a wireless network card
Step 2. Open the Windows 8 charms bar
Place the mouse cursor in the upper or lower right corner of the screen or press the key combination ⊞ Win + C. The charms bar will appear along the right side of the screen.
If you are using a mobile device running Windows 8, slide your finger across the screen starting from the right side
Step 3. Click on the "Settings" icon
It has a gear and is located at the bottom of the Windows 8 charms bar. The "Settings" menu will appear.
Step 4. Click on the Wi-Fi connection icon
It is characterized by a series of bars of increasing length and is located in the upper left part of the "Settings" menu. A list of all accessible wireless networks will be displayed.
Step 5. Select a network
Click on the name of the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. A small panel for the selected wireless network will appear.
Step 6. Click the Connect button
It is located in the lower right corner of the panel that appeared. The computer will start connecting to the network.
If you want the system to automatically connect to the target network when it is available, select the "Connect automatically" check button
Step 7. Enter the login password
You have to type it in the text field "Enter the network security key".
- If the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to isn't password protected, skip this step.
- If you have forgotten your wireless network login password, you can retrieve it by following the instructions in this article.
Step 8. Click the Next button
It is located in the lower left of the panel where you entered the network password.
Step 9. Select the sharing settings
Click on the link No, don't enable sharing or connect to devices or Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices. Normally, when you connect to a public network or a network that is not protected by a password, it is a good idea to choose the option that does not enable sharing. Conversely, if you are connecting to your office or home Wi-Fi network, you can choose to enable content sharing.
Enabling sharing on your computer allows you to connect it to other network devices, such as printers, speakers, or other computers
Step 10. Check the functionality of the connection
Open the internet browser you normally use and try to access a website (for example Google or Facebook). If the connection is working properly, you should be able to view the content of the requested page.
