This article describes how to restart your home network in the correct way. You must do this when you are unable to connect to the internet and before calling the technical service. You may need to print this page to have it available even when you can't access the internet or your computer is turned off.
Steps
Step 1. Turn off your computer
Step 2. Disconnect the modem's power supply
This is the box that the cable comes out of.
Step 3. Disconnect the power to your phone's VOIP adapter
If you don't have one, skip this step.
Step 4. Disconnect the power to the router
Step 5. Wait 45 seconds
Step 6. Plug the modem back in and wait for the lights to stabilize in an accurate pattern (this will take about a minute)
Step 7. Plug in the router and again wait for the lights to stabilize or for the router to start up (about 30 seconds)
Step 8. Reconnect the VOIP adapter (if you have this service) and wait to hear the connection sound in the phone again
If you don't have VOIP or don't know what it is, skip this step.
Step 9. Turn on your computer
Step 10. If you have completed the procedure, you should be able to access the internet
Advice
- Check the connections and cables to make sure they are well inserted and undamaged.
- If you need to call technical support, try to keep a positive attitude, talk to the representative who answers you as if they were your best friend, make a joke or talk about things you might have in common (hometown, sport, what weather does). This way they will go out of their way to help you.
- If you can't connect to the network, check if your modem has an on / off or standby button. In this case, try pressing it to see if the lights change or turn on.
- Try to practice the pattern of lights on your modem and all devices on the network. If you can figure out what the problem spy is, technical support can help you trace the cause of your internet connection failure and fix it. Make a note of when these lights come on if you don't know what normal operation is.
