One of the biggest problems on modern desktop computers is overheating, which can lead to freezes and shutdowns. This overheating can be caused by the blocked CPU heatsink. Here's how to fix it.
Steps
Step 1. Unplug BEFORE opening the case
Wear an antistatic bracelet if possible, or touch a metal part of the case before touching any of the computer components, in order to discharge static electricity.
Step 2. Consider other options first
Overheating problems can often be caused by bad ventilation inside the case. If you have space, try adding another fan. In addition, you should regularly open the case, disconnect all cables and blow compressed air on the components to remove dust. A small vacuum cleaner is a second good choice, but when using it you will need to be careful not to touch any internal components, also avoiding touching the printed circuits. Do everything calmly and clean thoroughly. After that, take a cotton swab dipped in cleaning alcohol and clean the internal components of the case. At this point, you can clean the external case with a cloth and a little water. Wait 2 hours for everything to dry before reconnecting the computer.
Step 3. Remove the small CPU fan plug from the motherboard
Grab the plastic end inserted into the motherboard and gently pull until it comes off. Do not pull the plug from the wires.
Step 4. Remove the CPU cooling fan
This fan is typically mounted with screws or a latch that must be released to remove the fan.
Step 5. Remove the CPU
The CPU is often mounted on the motherboard via a small lever that has to be lifted to remove the processor.
Step 6. Be careful not to drop the processor on the ground and do not pull hard if it is stuck
If the processor falls, it will be damaged. You may find the processor glued to the heatsink due to the thermal paste. Try to separate them. You could use a credit card to try to detach components, but be very careful not to damage the CPU.
Step 7. Clean the heat sink
Blows compressed air directly on the heatsink. A few blows are enough to clear a clogged heat sink. If the dirt is persistent, allow a few seconds to pass before starting to blow again.
Step 8. Carefully clean any residual thermal paste
Use a cotton swab or paper towel. You can help yourself with a small amount of cleaning alcohol, but be careful: too much alcohol is harmful.
Step 9. Return the CPU to the socket
Step 10. Apply a thin layer of thermal paste to the CPU
Apply only as much as needed, too much thermal paste could cause overheating problems again.
Step 11. Refit the heat sink
Push the lever back down, restart the fan and insert the plug back into the motherboard.
Step 12. Clean the case
Arrange any unpaired cables so they don't obstruct the fans, and replace the case panel.
Step 13. Start your computer and make sure everything is working

- It is easier to clean a heatsink on a desktop computer than on a laptop, but if you want to try your hand at it, there are tutorials that can help you. Use a search engine. Even if you can't find the exact model of your computer, you can find the tutorial for a similar model.
- Take pictures as you take your computer apart. Connection diagrams vary greatly from computer to computer, and taking pictures to help you reassemble the PC can be really useful.
- Use plastic cable clips (never metal!) To tie the unpaired cables together inside the case and give your computer a neater look. Also, by doing this, you will improve the internal ventilation of the case.
- Motherboards are all different. If you believe you need specific instructions but no longer have the user manual or have bought a second hand computer without a manual, try entering the model of your computer in a search engine to find instructions to remove the CPU and heat sink.. The motherboard model / number is almost always found on the motherboard itself - often in the center - and is represented by a combination of letters and numbers.
- Wear an antistatic wristband when working on the computer.
