Does your sixth sense alert you when you enter a room, or while walking down the street, and make you aware that you are being watched? These days, it probably is: spy cameras are everywhere, and new ones are added every day. You will wonder how to find these hidden cameras in order to protect your integrity and privacy. Here's how you can do it.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use Your Eyes
Step 1. Look for telltale signs
Even if the camera is hidden, the lens can only be masked.
-
Look for places where a camera can be hidden, whether it's in an office or a private home. Start with the most logical places like a bedroom, living room, and especially near valuables.
-
Objects in which a video camera is commonly hidden are books, smoke sensors, potted plants, tissue boxes, teddy bears, and electrical outlets.
-
Also look in less obvious items, such as a gym bag, handbag, DVD cases, air conditioners or lamps, buttons or tools.
-
Look for a small hole no larger than this "o" on the inward side of the room.
-
Try to figure out if a mirror has no reason to be placed where it is. It may be impossible to tell if there is a hidden camera, but you can realize the possibility that there actually is.
Step 2. Look for and avoid cameras in public places
-
Analyze the positions that give you the best view. Usually these are high points or areas with no obstructions in the view.
-
Look for glass or plastic domes, especially mirrored ones. Cameras in public places are usually protected. If the mirror surface is facing a specific area, it is very likely that there is a video camera behind it.
Method 2 of 2: Using Counter-Espionage Techniques
Step 1. Purchase a hidden camera detector, either on the internet or at a specialized electronics store
Use the detector to scan the room you are interested in
Step 2. Use your mobile
Make a call and move your cell phone near a suspicious object. If there is interference, it means that the phone is under the action of a magnetic field emitted by another device.
- This method does not work with all phones, but if you have verified that your cell phone is experiencing speaker interference, it should also serve the purpose described.
- Disassemble the appliance. If you suspect a breach of your privacy, contact law enforcement for a report.
- Work with the authorities to find the source of the cables and the box that records or transmits the video.
- If it were you who violated privacy, we're sorry… we caught you!
Advice
- Make a visual overview with discretion even in hotels and workplaces. In offices or other workplaces, there may be fake cameras for the purpose of discouraging misbehavior.
- Cable-connected video cameras are often used in corporate settings to prevent crime. They can be connected to recorders or surveillance monitors.
- Wireless video cameras are connected to a wireless transmitter and are usually slightly larger in size for this reason. They can be powered by batteries and transmit the signal to a recorder placed within approximately 50 or 60 meters of distance. This type of camera is often used by those who want to spy on other people.
