Road bikes can be adapted to the user's measurements. In this way you can reach the maximum compromise between comfort and efficiency. All the tools needed for these operations are available in any DIY store. Follow these tips.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Choose the Frame
Step 1. Choose the type of frame, it can be a C-C or an S-T
Step 2. Measure your height at the crotch
-
Stand straight with your back against the wall.
-
Spread your feet 15-20 cm.
-
Put a book between your feet with the bound edge facing out. The other edge should touch the wall.
-
Lift the book up to the groin. You should feel like you are on the saddle of the bike.
-
Ask a friend to measure the distance between the top of the book and the ground. This is the length of your crotch.
Step 3. Calculate the size of the frame
-
Multiply the crotch value by 0.65 if you've chosen a C-C frame. If the crotch is 76.2cm, you will get 49.5cm as a result, which is also the size of the frame you need to buy (or a very close size).
-
If you have chosen an S-T frame instead, multiply the crotch length by 0.67. If your crotch is 76.2 cm, the result is 51.1 cm, and is the reference value for the frame size.
Step 4. Calculate the horizontal tube (or maximum extension)
This value indicates how far you have to reach forward to reach the handlebar with your hands, and is measured from the center of the handlebar holding tube to the center of the seat tube.
-
Stand with your back against the wall.
-
Grab a pencil.
-
Extend your arm outwards keeping it parallel to the ground.
-
Ask a friend to measure the distance between the pencil and the point where the collarbone engages on the shoulder. This is the arm length.
-
Place a book between your feet with the bound edge facing out. The other edge should touch the wall.
-
Lift the book up to the groin.
-
Ask a friend to measure the distance between the top edge of the book and the dimple in your neck, just below the Adam's apple. This is the length of your bust.
-
Add arm length and bust length together. If the arm measures 61cm and the bust 61cm, the total will be 122cm.
-
Divide the result by two. In our example you will get the value of 61cm.
-
Add 10.2 cm. So you will have a result of 71.2 cm. This value represents the distance from the seat to the handlebar of the frame you need to purchase. Try to choose a bike that comes as close to this size as possible.
Method 2 of 2: Adjust the Seat Height
Step 1. Sit on the bike
Step 2. Bring a pedal to the lowest point of its rotation
Your leg should be slightly bent.
