On Earth, many people use products on a daily basis that help them with their daily tasks. In doing so, unfortunately, we also damage the natural environment with the production and waste generated by these materials. Smoke and vapors released from factories build up in our atmosphere, thus trapping more heat in the earth. The accumulation of carbon dioxide damages the ozone layer, a protective belt around our planet that filters ultraviolet rays. The Earth is warming due to the greenhouse effect. Improper waste disposal is also harmful to animals and insects. Waste steals beauty from our environment. However, there are a few ways that can help stop pollution.
Steps
Step 1. Get informed
Go to the bookstore, browse the web for solutions, and if you know someone well informed on the subject, talk to them. All this will help you to better understand the problem of pollution.
Step 2. Think small
Even the smallest actions, when performed by many, can make a big difference.
- Reduce, reuse and recycle.
- Turn the thermostat down in the winter and turn it up in the summer, even if only by a few degrees.
- Plant a tree.
- Turn off the light when you leave a room.
Step 3. Make yourself heard
- Share what you have learned with others, as no one will do it for you!
- Write an article for the school newspaper or your neighborhood newspaper.
- Post some flyers on the walls of your neighborhood.
- Do your best to get the word out.
- You could form a group with your friends and meet once a week. You might discuss what to do to make yourself useful. Preparing a speech on how to prevent pollution could also be helpful in spreading the word.
Step 4. Stop using paper towels and other disposable items
Instead of using paper towels to dry the dishes, use a tea towel. Use canvas bags for grocery shopping rather than piling up plastic bags every time you go to the grocery store.
Step 5. Use the machine only when you really need it
If you can, walk or cycle. Try to use public transport as much as possible to get around, such as train or bus.
Step 6. Use a group car
If your neighbor goes in the same direction as you, give him a lift. Next time, he'll do you the favor. Doing so will save money and fuel, while also reducing the ecological impact.
Advice
- Roll up your sleeves and do something to reduce pollution. If you see dirt on the ground, throw it in the garbage can!
- When you do something to help the community, don't be in a hurry. Take your time and start a little at a time.
- At the bar, use your thermos if you need to grab some take-away coffees.
- Small gestures like writing memos to remind you to buy canvas bags for grocery shopping can be of great help.
- Collect garbage from the ground, even if it's not yours.
