Do you want to become an actor or actress? Here is a guide suitable for all of you who want to become delicious, little stars.
Steps
Step 1. It will all start with the audition
Be SURE you know your script: no one wants an awkward person standing there with his mouth open and saying nothing. Make sure your emotions reach every corner of the room. Remember: you are not yourself. You have to forget everything you are and, instead, be the character. It is not you who plays the character; it is you who are talking. Immerse yourself in the character. You are no longer there, you do not exist.
Step 2. Express your character
With dialogue and music, you have to express your character! Make yourself really interesting to watch, and make others want to see more of it. Imagine this situation: You're auditioning for the female lead role. She is a tomboy and a troublemaker. You could stand up, with your knees tight, and say your lines while staring at the director. Or you could walk in quietly and speak naturally with a strong New York accent, leaning slightly forward and with an unbeatable swaggering gait. Your face has a constantly intense expression, with well-programmed gestures and movements.
Step 3. Make sure everyone can hear you
If your auditions take place in a real theater, great! But, as this is usually not the case, make sure you speak loudly as if you are in a theater and the directors are seated in the back row. Don't overdo it, though. Make sure your voice sounds very natural, not like you are shouting. If the director can't hear you, he won't give you a good part, because no one in the audience will hear you! Only the sounds loud enough reach the stage microphones!
Step 4. If you speak loud enough, you need to make sure the directors can understand what you are saying
This is a very important thing. You have to articulate the syllables well! This means pronouncing each word clearly, and making sure you make a sound for each letter. The most important letters are S, D, R, T, TH, and P. Practice pronouncing your lines clearly, paying particular attention to these letters.
Step 5. Have fun with what you are doing
What you might think is out of the ordinary for you is also much more interesting to watch. But, at the same time, you also have to infuse a lot of "reality" into the character when you are still yourself. How would you react to that situation in real life? If the character is sad, act as if you are going to cry. If the character is a daydreamer, lose yourself, and act light-heartedly, because that's who we really are!
Advice
- Get really involved! Act like it's real life!
- Whispering on stage is not the same as whispering normally, nor is it the same as just moving your lips without making any sound. To whisper correctly on stage, you need to lower your voice only slightly, making your voicing more aspirated - like a real whisper projected on the screen (even the people at the back of the room must be able to hear you!). It takes some practice to be able to whisper effectively on stage, but once you understand how, it's easy.
- You smile always and give the impression that you are having a good time (unless it's a sad scene).
- It's okay to be melodramatic. Make sure the audience knows what your character is feeling!
