A bunny costume can be very versatile, and can be worn by the whole family. Men can dress up as a White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, or as an Easter Bunny. Women can dress up as a Playboy bunny or a Duracell fleece bunny. Children can dress up as a bunny or hare with pendulous ears, or as a Bugs Bunny.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Fleece Rabbit Costume
Making the Jumpsuit
Step 1. Choose the color you want for your costume
Bunny bunnies are usually white, pink or gray, but they can also be black or brown. If you want to recreate a character like the Duracell battery bunny, you should choose the color based on the images you find on the Internet.
Step 2. Buy a roll of fleece a few meters long in the color of your choice if you want to make a one-piece suit
You can also recycle an old fleece jumpsuit for an adult costume, or turn an old sweatshirt into a baby onesie.
- Fleece is the ideal material for costumes because it is synthetic and does not fray.
- Instead of a bunny one-piece, you can also opt for a pink, white or gray two-piece suit.
- Or, if it's for a little girl, you can also make a leotard, tutu, or ballet leotard. Later you can add the tail and ears.
Step 3. Fold the fleece fabric in half lengthwise
Make a small hole for the head by cutting out a semicircle in the center of the folded edge. Turn the fabric over and put your head in to take your measurements.
Take it easy to cut. You always have time to cut more, but you can't go back if you've cut too much
Step 4. Pinch the flaps of fabric that are advancing on both sides, and secure them with safety pins
The “pinch and pin” tailoring technique is a way to quickly adapt the costume to your measurements. You can leave it a little abundant, or more snug, as you prefer.
Step 5. Cut the fleece just below the trunk if you want to make a simple short bunny tunic
If you still have fabric, you can continue the "pinch and pin" along the legs as well, to make a one-piece suit.
Step 6. Take off your suit
Sew with the sewing machine along the path outlined by the safety pins. Use thread of a color that goes well with the color of the suit. Straighten the suit and try it on.
Step 7. You can optionally cut out a round section for the belly in a different color
Cut out a circle of satin, felt or fleece that has a contrasting color to the white, gray or pink of the jumpsuit. Glue it to the center of the suit, from the chest to the waist.
Save some of this colorful fabric for the inside of the bunny's ears as well
Step 8. Get tights, socks, shoes and gloves of the same color as the suit
If possible, try not to leave any parts of the body uncovered apart from the face, to make the fur effect more convincing.
Making the Ears
Step 1. Get a headband to use for the rabbit's ears
Attach a sturdy wire to the top of the headband by looping it around. The cable must extend at least 15 centimeters to be able to shape the ears.
Step 2. Cut out the ears from the leftover fleece fabric. To draw perfectly oval ears, you can refer to the model found on the website https://d7nsd3m1z2har.cloudfront.net/Bunny%20Ears.pdf. Measure four remnants: two for the front, and two for the back of the ears.
Step 3. Pull the front to the back
Hold the fabric down. Sew the ear along the entire outer edge, and then turn it inside out. Repeat with the other ear.
Step 4. Cut out two smaller oval shapes to make the inside of the ears in a piece of fleece of a contrasting color to the main one, always using the pattern mentioned above
Secure them to the outside of the ears with safety pins.
Step 5. Sew along the entire edge of the inner ear, using color-coordinated thread
Be careful not to go too close to the center, or you won't have room left to attach the wire.
Repeat with the other ear
Step 6. Slip your ears onto the end of the cords at the top of the headband
Fold one in half if you want to be a bunny with pendulous ears.
Step 7. Glue the fabric to the base of the headband
Use strong-grip fabric or hobby glue.
Step 8. Wrap the remaining fabric around the headband
To secure it, glue it as you wrap it.
Step 9. Get some face paints, and draw a pink circle on the nose, and bunny whiskers all over the face
Queue
Step 1. Buy a large feather boa in a color that matches the suit, and also the belly and inner ear sections
In hobby shops you can find Marabou feather boas.
You can also attach a piece of cushion pad to the costume to make the tail wad
Step 2. Glue it in a spiral to the back of the suit
Before wearing, let the glue dry overnight.
Step 3. Secure the buoy with safety pins to the back of the suit to give the suit more compactness and firmness
Safety pins must be inside the suit. Secure a few bits of buoy here and there with safety pins.
Method 2 of 2: Bodysuit Style Rabbit Costume
This model is very basic, but its beauty is that it does not require seams, and it only takes a few things that you surely have at home to assemble it very quickly (assuming you have a leotard at home).
Step 1. Get the right size leotard
If you don't have it, you can use a one-piece swimsuit. Choose one with a "bunny" color.
Step 2. Choose a tights in the color you prefer
Again, choose one with a "bunny" color.
Step 3. Choose a pair of ballet flats that match the leotard and leotard
Step 4. Make the bunny's tail
- Cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of a circle. The circumference must be equal to the size you want to give to the tail.
- Glue a Velcro holder to one side of the circle. Glue the other side of the support to the tights, at the height of the lower back. You choose whether to sew it or glue it.
- Attach a bunch of cotton balls to the other side of the cardboard circle. Attach as many as there are but don't overdo it, with the aim of creating a nice overhang to make the tail more realistic.
Step 5. Make rabbit ears
- Get a suitable headband. Put on the headband, which must have a fairly wide ribbon and must be a color that matches the dress, or white.
- To make the ears you can use two pipe cleaners, wrapping them around the headband to keep them in place, and shaping them so that they stretch upward like a rabbit's ears. These are just the ear supports, which you will proceed to do as follows.
- Cut out the shapes of the bunny ears from a piece of white cardboard. Cut four ears, two for the front, and two for the back.
- Using tape, stapler, or glue, attach the ears to both sides of the braces you have already secured to the headband.
- With a marker, draw the "inner" ears on the front side of the ears. Alternatively, you can cut out the inner ears from a piece of pink cardboard, and attach them to the ears with tape or glue.
Step 6. Make a bunny face
Draw it on the child's face using the make-up paints. Don't forget about the mustache.
Step 7. Take a carrot with you
It can be a toy carrot, a real carrot, or a piece of cardboard in the shape of a carrot.
Step 8. Take a leap into new "bunny" adventures
Advice
- To make the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, put on a vest over the white rabbit costume. Add a pocket watch, umbrella, and white cotton gloves.
- For the Bugs Bunny costume, wear a mask with white teeth, and bring a cloth carrot.
- For the Easter bunny costume, get a basket and fill it with candy, eggs, and grass.
- For the Playboy bunny costume, replace the fleece with satin and wear a bodice, skirt, and fishnet stockings in the color of your choice.
