Here's how to do the basic New York-style salsa step (for women). The step for man is the same but reflected in reverse.
Steps
Step 1. Normally the music consists of 8 beats for each beat
If you go to dance class, you will hear the teacher count from 1 to 8. In salsa lessons, the teacher will count 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7. However, times 4 and 8 are present but represented by a break. If you can't find where the pause is, count out loud to include 4 and 8 as well.
Step 2. Imagine the point where you are standing as point 1, then point 2 is one step ahead of you and point 3 is one step behind you
Step 3. The steps are always performed with the right foot, left foot, right foot, as when walking
Step 4. Beginning with the right foot, you will dance on these points:
1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 1, therefore:
- Right foot
- Left foot
-
Right foot
(Pause time 4)
- Left foot
- Right foot
-
Left foot
(Break time 8)
Step 5. Repeat
Practice following this pattern until it becomes easy to perform.
