Although Twerk has been around for twenty years, ever since Miley Cyrus brought it out at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2013, it has become a real craze. The strong point of this dance step is the butt, accentuating the movement of the pelvis and body. Some young people think "Twerk" is fun, others that it is downright weird, but it has certainly become part of today's dance culture. Keep up with the latest trends, and learn various ways to do it by following these simple steps.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Squat & Shake Twerk
Step 1. Get into the "squat" position
Don't go too low, but just enough to be stable and easily keep your balance. Try to keep your knees set back from your toes to avoid injury to your knees. Keep your legs apart, with your feet facing out. This will help you keep your balance when you start moving. This is the most common way to twerk, and also the least provocative.
Choose the right pace and start practicing! You can start by doing it slowly in the beginning, to learn the basic movements, and speed up once you start mastering it
Step 2. Put your butt out
Get into the same position as you would if you were sitting in a chair - your butt should be the main attraction. Be careful to keep your knees bent and your hands on your hips. Keep your upper body straight and look forward. You don't need to look down to Twerk properly.
When you put your butt out, you can lean forward about 45 degrees, shifting your weight onto your toes, as in the so-called "Miley Twerk". If you want to be a little less scandalous, just lean forward less and keep your back straighter
Step 3. Move your butt back and forth
If you keep your hands on your hips as you Twerk, you should push your thumbs on the sacrum as you move forward, accompanying the movement with your hips. When you move your butt backwards, help yourself by pushing your hips with your other fingers. If, on the other hand, you like more twerk dancing without resting your hands, you can raise your arms in front of you, keeping them close to each other and parallel to the floor, swaying them gently as you dance.
- For the "Miley Twerk" you should move your hips quickly from right to left, for the normal Twerk, move your butt up and down, accompanying it with your back more or less arched for better results. Don't worry if you don't have a big butt, anyone can do this!
- The key is to isolate the parts of the body. Try to keep the upper part rather fixed while moving the lower part.
- You can also change a bit by placing your hands forward, spread to the side, or resting on the back of your hips.
- You may also want to lower yourself a little more. placing your hands on your knees, pointing your fingers at it, turning your wrists outward and shaking your butt with your hands.
- If you do indeed go for this method, it also mimics Miley's now famous expression.
Method 2 of 3: Wall Twerk (at the Wall)
Step 1. Stand about half a meter from a solid wall
Keep your back to the wall, but close enough that you can still see it with your peripheral vision. This is the most eye-catching way to twerk. Don't throw yourself out on the dance floor after a few too many drinks, because you will fall for sure. To try the Wall Twerk, you have to be pretty confident in your skills already. These are not moves for beginners..
You need a lot of upper body strength and good coordination to be able to perform this type of twerk
Step 2. Put your hands on the ground
Make sure you have a good grip, as you will need to rest your feet on the wall without falling. Your hands should rest completely on the ground to help you balance your body. Pull your butt up to make it easier to lift your legs. The hands should be approximately 30 cm in front of the feet, and open at shoulder height. Once they are well supported, shift the weight of your legs onto your hands.
Your entire upper body should be basically in the handstand position. The fingers must point forward
Step 3. Stand with your feet on the wall keeping your knees bent as you move your butt
Start with one leg, put it on the wall until you feel stable, then move the other leg as well. The legs should be spread apart, with the feet approximately 30 cm from the hips. Keep your toes firmly on the wall and practice the back and forth motion, creating the distinctive twerk motion. Keep your arms and upper body still as you move your lower body (but it will stand higher!). You can think of these moves as a variation of "Twerk Hands on the Ground" - the only difference being that you are leaning against the wall.
- You should aim to stay on the wall for about thirty seconds, maybe even a minute or the duration of a short song, but remember that your hands and shoulders will hurt after a while.
- It can also be a great opportunity to get a second person to join you and show off their skills.
- Make sure you get off carefully. Go one foot at a time. You can continue doing the Twerk "Hands on the Ground", or simply take a short break before reviving the Miley in you.
Method 3 of 3: Hands on the Ground Twerk
Step 1. Stand with your legs parallel and slightly apart
Make sure you keep your torso facing forward and your legs straight. Spread them out at the hips. If they are too close, it will be harder to bend over to twerk properly.
Step 2. Put your hands on the ground
Turn your toes outward as you lower yourself. You can keep your legs slightly bent and make sure you touch the ground with at least your fingertips. If you are more flexible, no one prevents you from resting your palms on the ground; it will help you keep your balance.
Step 3. Get your butt out
Quickly flex and straighten your legs, accentuating the movement of your butt as you perform. Follow the rhythm of the music. You can also shake your butt as you move. To do the normal twerk, bend your back letting your butt move up and down. For the Miley Twerk, quickly wiggle your hips from right to left.
Advice
- When doing the "Wall Twerk", be careful not to fall!
- Wear shorts or 'spandex' shorts, something that highlights your butt.
- Don't wear jeans or other tight-fitting clothing that prevents your butt from swaying freely.
- When doing the "Wall Twerk" tie your hair so it doesn't fall on your face.
- Remember to arch your back when twerking.
