Steps

Step 1. Find an old plastic waste container with a lid

Make a drain hole in the bin near the bottom. Position the bin so that the runoff from the drainage hole goes back into the pond.

Advice

  • If you want to attach the water inlet to the base of the container you can find the machinery (it will be registered as an attachment of the hydraulic system of the rain barrel). The benefit of moving the water up is that this creates the height for a waterfall and if the filter becomes blocked your pond will still not dry up. You will need to start with a container equipped with a torch or spout, the bigger the better and using lava rocks for filtering, it will work great.
  • A smaller version of this mechanism can be made using a plastic shoebox. A smaller version could be placed in the pond, connected FRONT of the pump so as to draw the pond water through the filter rather than pouring it from above.
  • You can alternatively fill the bin with half-clean gravel and then cover the filter material with a sponge.
