Being an expert allows you to become an authority in your field. It usually brings more prestige and better earnings. You become an expert with focused practice, study and good marketing.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Part One: Developing the Experience
Step 1. Choose a field that interests you deeply
For example physics, journalism, sports, online marketing if you feel motivated to learn it both in your free time and professionally.
Step 2. Choose a profession in which you have some talent
Talent is simply an attitude towards a subject and the ability to improve in that subject over time. It's hard to believe that people can't be experts in just about anything.
Even though practice is large part of the equation, a person who has no aptitude for music is unlikely to become a great pianist
Step 3. Practice "intentionally"
That is, challenge yourself with difficult tasks in this subject instead of always staying at your current level. If you want to become an expert, calculate that you will have to spend around 10,000 hours of practice before you can enjoy that status.
Step 4. Give yourself time
Few people manage to mature these 10,000 hours of training in less than 10 years. Work hard in your field or hobby for ten years and you will gain the experience that will support you when you claim to be an expert.
Try to remember that this varies according to the chosen subject. For example, it takes about 700 hours to become a yoga expert and over 42,000 hours for neurosurgery. The specialist publications can tell you how much time you will need to devote to this task
Step 5. Read everything you find about it
Consolidate the experience with study and research. Keep up with the latest trends in the field.
Step 6. Learn from the experts that they already are
Sign up for courses, conferences, and get certifications that prove you've learned from the best.
Step 7. Gain evidence of your skills
Get a master's or doctorate if you want to work in business or science. Education, both self-learned and degree-related, is an important part of selling yourself as an expert.
If you are learning a sport or certain types of music it may not be necessary
Method 2 of 2: Part Two: Selling the Experience
Step 1. Consult the people you work with or your company
Tell them you'd like to write blog articles for the company newsletter. Become the face of your current employer.
Step 2. Create your own blog
From expert judgments. Make sure your posts are targeted at industry professionals and not just a general audience.
- Become a guest blogger. Contact other bloggers and volunteer to write on their blogs occasionally.
- Optimize yours for social media. Be present on Facebook and Twitter so that people can find and follow you through the links.
Step 3. Try to teach
Inquire at universities or for those study centers. Learning to teach what you are well versed in is essential to selling yourself as a consultant.
Step 4. Become a mentor
Sign up on Pivot Planet or Skill Share as an expert in your field. Add them to your resume along with education and experience.
- These sites are ways to teach, but the use of the internet also allows meetings and video courses.
- You can also post your lessons on YouTube or Vimeo. Put them on your blog by tagging them as "expert advice."
Step 5. Offer to speak at conferences
Teach in lectures within conferences or join keynote speakers. When important conferences start asking you to speak without you having to apply, you will know that you are recognized as an expert.
Step 6. Become an expert advisor
Monetize your deep knowledge with a 'business-to-business' website and consulting. You can also become a coach for younger people who want to start their own business.
