From time to time, an autobiographical theme may be assigned to you as a homework assignment. It may be very difficult to write it down and "not" feel presumptuous in some way. Here are some pointers for writing about yourself without feeling full of yourself.
Steps
Step 1. Compile a list of important events in your life
We will deal with the writing and introduction later. Try to think about the things that have helped shape your views on the world and make you the person you are now. Keep chronological order.
Step 2. Focus on single events
For each event you wrote, express yourself as if you were only talking about that topic.
Step 3. Link the various events
After completing the second step for each event, start connecting them, explaining how they relate to each other and how they have influenced your life.
Step 4. Add the introduction
After writing the bulk of the theme, move on to the introduction. It is advisable to take a humble, but not self-denigrating, position. Explain the reason for the importance of your autobiography for the reader. Drag it inside the work.
Step 5. Build the conclusion
After writing the introduction and main body, reread the writing and pull the strings in the conclusion. Explain how all of this has gotten you to where you are today, how these events have really impacted your current lifestyle for better and for worse.
Step 6. Correct the draft
Now re-read the text and eliminate repetitions, errors and inaccurate elements. Check spelling, grammar and even stylistic errors.
Step 7. Consider what can be done to improve the flow of writing, as well as readability, without sacrificing the accuracy of what you are describing
Remember to add important details, like who was with you at an important event, but don't add things that don't affect the story, like the color of the shirt you wore that day.
Step 8. Take your theme and have someone read it, ask them to suggest changes and ask what they think
Ask people who have known you for a long time as well as new acquaintances. This way you will have objective opinions.
Step 9. Rewrite, making the necessary changes to improve your work
Step 10. Re-read, edit again
Step 11. Rewrite one more time and stay alert to the need for changes
Advice
- Ask good friends and family for help. They can help you have an objective point of view, and therefore avoid being too subjective or prejudiced.
- It is useful to separate the events of your life into categories: Good and Bad or Ethical and Unethical; there are a myriad of different ways to look at one thing.
- Have anything you may need for consultation on hand.
- Have a dictionary and a “paper” thesaurus handy.
- Cite those sources. It serves to increase credibility.
Warnings
- It can take a while. Make sure you start well in advance. DO NOT PROCRASTIN !!
- Don't try to rationalize your past mistakes to make them seem more acceptable. If you've screwed up, be willing to admit it.
- Constantly checks grammar, spelling and stylistic errors, as well as those of context and definitions.
