Mold can endanger your health and that of your family. It can cause headaches, dizziness, and breathing problems. Often, getting rid of it is simple: just wipe a disinfectant wipe on the wall or shower curtain and use a dehumidifier. In other cases, for example after a flood or severe water loss, a thorough cleaning is required. This article will tell you how to remove mold in your home.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Preparation
Step 1. Use a polypropylene liner and vinyl tape to mark the affected area and separate it from the mold-free area
Step 2. Turn on the dehumidifier
It should remain in operation for the duration of the cleaning, and for several hours after it is finished. Bear in mind that this appliance may become filled with mold spores and dust, so it requires washing before being used again in a clean environment.
Step 3. Wear protective clothing, a breathing mask, goggles and a pair of gloves
Disposable coveralls are often used because they are inexpensive and create a moisture and mold resistant barrier as you work. You should bring these pieces throughout the cleaning.
Step 4. Mix an all-purpose household cleaner and water according to the instructions on the package
Transfer the solution into a bottle with a spray dispenser.
Bleach is not recommended for getting rid of mold. A solution consisting of 80% vinegar or 70% methylated spirits (methanol) is preferable for this cleaning. If there is gray or black water from the sewer system or from a flood, it is best to follow the appropriate steps to treat the contamination first (read this article)
Step 5. Pour lukewarm water into a separate rinsing spray bottle
Method 2 of 3: Cleaning
Step 1. Use the all-purpose detergent solution and a brush or rag to remove visible mold
Start cleaning from the top of the room, and work your way down. Change or rinse your rags and brushes frequently. Wipe the area with clean water or a vinegar-based solution, then wipe the area with a dry cloth.
Step 2. Use a mop for large areas
Leave the solution on for 15 minutes. Rinse the area with a damp rag or by sprinkling with water. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
Method 3 of 3: Finish Cleaning
Step 1. Pass a vacuum cleaner with a highly efficient fluid filtration system (HEPA filter); let it act for 10 minutes on a surface of one square meter
Do this once the area has dried completely.
Step 2. If there is space, insert the HEPA filter vacuum cleaner bag into the garbage bag used for dirty rags
You can also throw away the gloves like this. Close the bag to prevent contamination and throw it in the garbage can.
Step 3. Pour the dirty water down the drain
Step 4. Check the dehumidifier to see if it needs cleaning, and if necessary, take care of it
Step 5. Take off your overalls and throw it away
Wash your hands and face. Get rid of contaminated clothes and take a shower. If you have not used a protective suit, the clothing used for the procedure may need to be disposed of in the trash.
Step 6. Clean the shoes with the same cleaning method used for mold and let them dry
Overshoes are useful while you go through the procedure so you don't have to clean them.
Advice
- Do not remove the breathing mask until the end of the procedure.
- If you think you can't complete this cleanup yourself, contact a mold removal company.
- Children and pets should not be in the work area during the process. Mold spores can spread through the air and cause breathing problems.
Warnings
- Do not mix bleach and ammonia. Read the labels of all products. This combination generates potentially lethal chlorine gas.
- Bleach can be very irritating to skin and eyes. Always wear protective clothing, gloves and goggles when using it.
