An enema is, by definition, the injection of a liquid into the anus for the purpose of stimulating evacuation. Enemas are a great tool for colon cleansing - and that's not the only benefit they bring. But how to get an enema at home? Basically it's easy and pretty safe (enemas that contain alcohol are not recommended). If you want to find an easy way to cleanse your colon and liver, or are tired of feeling constipated, follow a few tips. This article will tell you how to do two different types of enema: one for cleansing and another for retention.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Preparation
Step 1. Gather what you need
While stimulating evacuation with an enema is pretty easy, you will need some essential tools:
- A couple of old big towels.
- A teaspoon of organic almond oil, olive or coconut oil, for lubrication.
- One liter of distilled water at body temperature.
- A clean kit for doing enemas.
- A book or newspaper - they will prove useful!
Step 2. Find a warm, comfortable place to give the enema
This could be a private bathroom with a space to put the enema bag down or hang it up (it should be 60-90cm from the floor).
Find a space to spend time near or inside the bathroom. Once the enema is done you may only have a few seconds before the body decides to evacuate. If that happened and you weren't near the bathroom, you'd be in trouble
Step 3. Assemble the kit according to the instructions included in the package
Usually you will find there:
- A bag for the liquid.
- A hook to hang it.
- A tube.
- A cap.
- A rectal probe.
Step 4. Arrange the towels on the bathroom floor
Try to make the environment as comfortable as possible.
Step 5. Use the oil to lubricate both the anus and the first few inches of the enema probe
Method 2 of 3: Cleansing Enema
Step 1. Find out the methods and benefits of a cleansing enema
This type of enema is the one we usually know: designed to be quick and easy, this method should stimulate a quick evacuation and cleanse the colon. There are many different ways to do cleansing enemas. Below you will find some that you can safely perform at home:
- Lemon juice. Helps cleanse the colon and balances the pH. It is also believed to help detoxify the system.
- Apple cider vinegar and water. It is another way to regulate the pH and get rid of mucus.
- Catnip tea. Helps to resolve constipation and brings down high fever.
- Burdock root. Widely used in Asia, it helps utilize calcium deposits and disinfect blood.
- Chamomile. Very relaxing and effective.
Step 2. Mix the chosen element with water, making sure you have diluted it properly
If in doubt, err on the side of caution: dilute the enema more than you think necessary. It should consist almost exclusively of water, while the added elements are the "healing" support.
Step 3. Use the clamp to control the flow; fill the bag with distilled water and the add-on of your choice
Keep the probe on the tub or toilet. Run some water to make sure there are no air bubbles left in the tube. When there are none left, it blocks the tube stopping the flow.
Step 4. Lie on your back, with your knees bent towards your chest
Step 5. When you feel comfortable, insert the nozzle approximately 7 cm into the anus
Stop if you feel resistance and slightly adjust the angle until it enters easily.
Step 6. Slowly open the clamp to let the water begin to flow
Do it slowly: if you go too quickly you will feel the immediate urge to evacuate. The key to a great enema is to try to retain fluids until the body's natural peristaltic movements are activated. If you get cramps, shut off the flow and take a deep breath before continuing. Lightly massaging the abdomen is another way to relieve cramps.
Step 7. After you've filled in as much water as you can, gently remove the probe
Stay lying on the floor.
Step 8. After holding the liquid for a few minutes, sit on the toilet and relax
Wait until you are able to excrete water and feces.
Step 9. Done
Clean your tools and leave them in the open air before storing them.
Method 3 of 3: Retention Enema
Step 1. Find out the methods and benefits of a retention enema
If a cleansing enema is comparable to a short walk in the park, a retention enema is a long hike. These types of enemas are what their name suggests: instead of introducing fluids and expelling them quickly, you should be able to hold them for 5 to 15 minutes. The most used ingredients for this type of enema are:
- Coffee. Brewing coffee is fine, but you can also choose instant coffee. This type of enema stimulates the colon and gallbladder. Make sure you choose the right ingredient or you may have a sleepless night: the colon has a high absorption capacity.
- Probiotics. They are considered excellent against fungal infections and candidiasis. All probiotics perform this action.
- Cranberry leaves. They are considered beneficial for women. They contain iron and improve vision.
- Infusion of wheat. It is believed to help create positive bacteria and nourish the colon.
Step 2. Since you will be treating this enema for longer than the other, make sure the ingredients you use are not harmful
This type of enema can make you feel very good, but it can also really hurt you if performed inappropriately. Whatever your choice, you need to feel comfortable entering it.
Step 3. Follow the same procedure as the cleansing enema
The process is exactly the same.
Step 4. Instead of letting your body go at its own pace, force yourself to hold onto the solution for 5 to 15 minutes
If you get cramps, again massage your abdomen and find a more comfortable position.
Step 5. At the end of your time, move to the toilet and evacuate the enema
Step 6. Done
Clean your tools and leave them in the open air before storing them.
Advice
- Make sure you have everything you need close by so you don't have to stretch or struggle to reach objects while giving the enema.
- Make it simple, the first time. Don't try to create complicated solutions, use only distilled water.
- Don't be discouraged. Many enema bags contain nearly 2 liters of water, which is a lot. If you can't get it all in, don't feel bad. It is not a competition, it is an enema.
- Pay attention to the temperature of the solution. The ideal is 39 ° C. If it gets too cold, it could cause cramps, but if it's too hot you will feel burning.
