It is relatively easy to travel from Baltimore to Washington DC, whether for business or tourism. By starting early and knowing public transportation, getting to Washington DC will be a breeze.
Steps
Step 1. Plan your trip in advance
Delays are very common especially during peak hours.
Step 2. If you travel to Washington on weekdays, the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) rail service is the cheapest and most convenient
MARC trains run on three lines, Brunswick, Camden and Penn. The Camden Line takes you directly from Baltimore MD to Washington DC.
- MARC trains are functional from Monday to Friday.
- For more information on MARC services click here. For information on rates click here.
Step 3. When in Washington DC, use the subway to get around the city
For more information on the Washington Metro click here
Step 4. Public transport is very limited on weekends
Here are your travel options:
- Amtrak. Similar to the MARC service but more expensive. Click here for more information on Amtrak.
- Car. If you have a car it is the most convenient way to travel. See below for the best route to take.
Step 5. However, it is better to travel outside peak hours
The motorways are very busy during those hours. See the "Tips" section below for more information on the route.
Take into account the carpool. You can take advantage of the special lanes (where possible) and it will also be an eco-sustainable experience
Advice
-
If you are departing from Baltimore BWI Airport you have the following options:
- Taxi / shared or car / van taking 295 or I-495 to DC.
- MARC (days of the week) or Amtrak to Union Station (there are many transport shuttles between the airport and train stations).
- Metrobus B30 to Greenbelt Metro Station (Green MetroRail Line).
- Concarreggio is the most effective method in the DC metropolitan area.
-
The best journey by car:
- Many prefer the Baltimore-Washington Parkway because trucks can't use it.
- I-95 has multiple lanes but is very busy at rush hour.
- I-495 Washington Beltway is another way to get to DC, but it's just as busy during rush hour.
