Drawing a cat with your computer keyboard is simple. It only takes a few simple keys to create an adorable virtual kitty. If you wish, you can increase the complexity of the drawing!

Part 1 of 3: Preparation
Step 1. Find out how to make the most commonly used signs for drawing cats
There are certain keys that you will need to use to compose the different parts of the cat's body. Some people are able to create very complex designs with their keyboard, but they all make use of the same keys.
- The "^" sign (hold "Shift" and press "ì" above the first row of letters) is perfect for the ears, you can use the "." for the nose and mouth, you can use "w" or two underscores interrupted by a period "_._".
- You can use upper or lower case "o" for the eyes; if you want to draw a surprised cat, use the "q" to represent crying eyes or the "@" for the eyes of a stunned cat. Don't be afraid to experiment in a text document.
Step 2. Use the right font and try not to use spaces
Unless specifically stated, many emoticons do not use spaces between characters. If you add spaces or use the wrong font, your drawing could look like anything but a cat.
- When you use multiple lines of text to create a cat with paws, the figure may not appear correctly if you use a font that is not monospaced - that is, the letters of which do not have a uniform horizontal width.
- The most common examples of monospaced fonts are Courier and American Typewriter. Many frequently used fonts, such as Times New Roman and Arial, are not. The latter are known as proportional fonts.
Step 3. Search the internet for cat faces made with the ASCII code
In their more complex forms, these designs have a technical name: ASCII art. It is a drawing technique that creates images using the 95 printable characters defined by the ASCII standard.
- There are many types of cats, some extraordinarily complex. For example, you will find the smiley ^^, made by pressing Shift and "ì" twice, the smiley = '.' =, Which comments itself and many more.
- Experiment and use your imagination. The use of ASCII is considered an art form, because there is no single way to draw a cat or any other image. On the internet, you will find many sites that offer this type of images.
- Try searching the internet for the image you want to make, followed by the word ASCII. You will find the creations of other users. If you want to create a drawing yourself, try searching for a tutorial. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish with your keyboard.
- You could enable different languages for your keyboard and use the signs of various alphabets.
Part 2 of 3: Drawing a Simple Cat Face
Step 1. Draw a simple cat
There are several ways to make a cat with your keyboard, but the simplest ones only require a couple of keys.
- Create the first whiskers by pressing the "=" (equal) key. On the screen, you will see: =
- Continue with the first eye, typing a "^" (caret), pressing "Shift" and "ì". On the screen, you will see: = ^
- Draw the mouth by pressing the "." Key twice. On the screen, you will see: = ^..
- Create the second eye and the other mustache, typing a caret and the equal sign. If you have pressed all the keys correctly, the figure should look like a cat. On the screen, you will see: = ^.. ^ =
- An alternate version of the design uses a single stitch for the nose and different symbols for the ears. > ^. ^ <
Part 3 of 3: Creating More Complex Cats
Step 1. Add variants
You can change the symbols by replacing the colon with a hyphen or an underscore: = ^ - ^ = or = ^ _ ^ =. Leave room for your creativity, introducing all the variations you want. You can also type the following keys: = '. '=. Note: If you don't use spaces, you will get = '.' =.
- You can add the legs in another row; start by drawing them on the line following the one where the nose is, pressing the "Enter" key. Draw the first foot, typing an opening parenthesis followed by quotes and a closing parenthesis.
- On the screen, you will see: ("). Now draw the second foot: repeat step 2. On the screen, you will see: (") ("). Enjoy your cat face, which complete with paws will look like this: = ^.. ^ = (") (")
Step 2. Try other versions
You can try different variations of the smiley face, such as (^ 'w' ^) (opening parenthesis, caret, space, superscript, space, w, space, superscript, space, caret, closing parenthesis).
- There are many variations of cat faces, especially as regards the eyes.
- Another version is (^ = 'w' = ^) (equal symbols have been added to represent mustache). You will immediately notice that the circumflex accents (^) are the most important parts in this design, because they are reminiscent of the cat's ears.
