Going on a scooter is a great way to develop a sense of balance. Plus it's much easier than learning to ride a bike! Once you have mastered the basics, you can try performing some "tricks".
Steps
Step 1. Put on your helmet
Even if you think you don't need it, it will come in handy, especially while you're learning. Wear it all the time, and not just because it is required by law. It is an indispensable protection for your safety. You can also consider wearing knee, elbow and wrist protection.
Step 2. Find a flat area, like a street with little traffic and few holes and ruts
This will make it easier for you to practice.
Step 3. Place one foot on the scooter and firmly grasp the handlebar
Keep one foot in the center of the platform while the other is firmly planted on the ground.
Step 4. Use your foot on the ground to give yourself a little push forward
Keep your foot raised a few centimeters: if you get unbalanced it could help you keep your balance.
Step 5. When you feel stable, you can place your foot on the platform next to the other
Step 6. When you want to stop you have to press the brake until you are completely stopped
If you squeeze the brake for just a few seconds, you simply slow down, but then you will continue to move once you release it.
Step 7. Take turns slowly by turning the handlebars
If you make a sudden swerve, you can fall.
Advice
- No matter how experienced you are, ALWAYS wear a helmet.
- Always keep the front end straight while driving, unless you have to make evolutions that require something different. This is the trick to maintaining balance.
- Give way to the cars, and pull over.
- When going downhill, keep the brake lightly pressed. If you go too fast you can lose control.
- If you are about to bump into something, jump off the scooter. To do this, jump off the scooter by passing it between your legs and release the handlebar by pushing it forward. It's a surefire way to not get hurt in an accident.
Warnings
- Listen for cars behind you and pull over if necessary.
- Look at the road ahead and pay attention to the potholes. If you don't see them in time, you could have an accident.
- Don't try to launch at full speed down a steep descent. You will most likely lose control and fall badly.
- Watch out. The best security is prevention. Always wear a helmet and knee and elbow protectors.
