A flat tire is the most frequent inconvenience when driving. When you don't have the spare wheel, you only have a couple of solutions left. This article will tell you how to fix it.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Sealant
Step 1. Read the instructions on the can of sealant you have available
Depending on the manufacturer, there may be slightly different usage warnings. It would be better to wear protective gloves and goggles.
If necessary, find and remove the object that pierced the rubber
Step 2. Unscrew the valve cap and connect the can nozzle
Press the button to release the sealant inside the rubber.
Method 2 of 2: Rubber Repair Kit
Step 1. With the car parked on all 4 wheels, loosen the nuts with a socket wrench
Step 2. Lift the car with the jack, engaging it in the appropriate notch
Check the car maintenance manual if you are not sure about the procedure.
Step 3. Remove the nuts and remove the rubber from the hub
Step 4. Check the eraser for objects such as small stones or nails
Run your hand over the tread if necessary to find them.
Step 5. Remove the object with pliers and mark the point with a chalk or a marker
If there is no protruding object, it is difficult to identify the origin of the air leak. In this case, mix soap and water to form a foam
Step 6. Apply the soapy solution to the surface of the tire
Bubbles will form at the point of the hole. Mark the zone as explained above.
Step 7. Find the file inside the kit and insert it into the hole quickly several times
This tool cleans and roughs the edges of the hole so that the patch sticks.
Step 8. Fill the patch with the glue included in the kit
Use the tool you always find in the kit to insert the patch into the hole in the rubber. The patch should stick out an inch or two.
Step 9. Wait for the adhesive to dry for about a minute and then cut the excess material protruding from the tread
Step 10. Inflate the wheel and check that the pressure is correct
Step 11. Apply some soapy solution over the repair to check for tightness
If there are leaks, add more glue or another patch.
Step 12. Refit the tire on the hub and tighten the nuts in a star pattern
Advice
- Only repair or seal a tire if the hole is no larger than 6mm. Tears and holes that are wider or deeper cannot be repaired this way.
- Both methods described are temporary solutions until the rubber is checked and repaired by a professional.
Warnings
- The use of sealants can void the warranty on your tire. Check the terms before using these types of products.
- Do not drive with a flat tire. You can irreparably damage the rubber and steel arms.
