The table saw is an indispensable tool in a workshop, but it is also very dangerous. You must know how to use it safely.
Steps
Step 1. Read the user manual
Make sure the blade fits and is fitted correctly. Always wear safety glasses and keep the blade sharp, as a thinly edged blade can break the wood, causing splinters to detach.
Step 2. Check the blade guard
It works properly? It is good to check from time to time that there are no loose screws. Always use protection if possible. If not, put on additional protective clothing.
Step 3. Make sure the saw blade and plane are perfectly perpendicular
To check, draw a straight line with a square on a scrap piece, then make the cut.
Step 4. Avoid wearing baggy jewelry or clothing
Both can get caught in the blade, with the risk of damaging them and being dragged towards the blade.
Step 5. Keep the blade low
A blade with a limited height is less dangerous as it reduces the risk of kickback. The higher the blade, the fewer teeth will touch the wood, causing more friction, more heat and a greater risk of kickback.
Step 6. Before starting, check that there are no knots, nails or staples in the wood
Avoid knots if possible. If you can't, be careful when cutting them.
Step 7. Start the saw and let it run to full speed before starting the cut
Step 8. Stand to the side in case the wood gets kicked back, and be sure to hold the piece firmly on both sides of the blade
Step 9. Use a stick to push the piece forward to avoid getting your hands close to the blade
Never stand too close to the blade and don't try to cut a piece that is too long or too wide if you can't handle it comfortably. Do not push the piece, guide it towards the blade with light pressure. Forcing, you will cause more friction and risk kicking back.
Step 10. While cutting, hold the piece of wood firmly against the rail
If necessary, use a bench extension, rollers or another person to handle the workpiece.
Step 11. Wait until the blade has come to a complete stop before pulling it out of the wood if you are not making a full cut from side to side
Step 12. Put on your ear protectors
Table saws are extremely noisy, and you seriously risk damaging your hearing if you don't wear the proper protection. A good pair of headphones costs around 20 Euros, but you can also use earplugs, which sell for around 2 Euros.
