Many years ago, the pocket watch was a common accessory among men, but today it is still possible to use it. If you inherited one from a relative or bought it, here's how to wear it to give a vintage touch to your outfits.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Choose and Wear a Pocket Watch
Step 1. If you already have it, you probably inherited it, so you have an item that combines your family history with a design you won't find for sale
Use it as a practical and stylish accessory, recalling its charm of yesteryear.
-
Watch out. Inherited items are irreplaceable, so be sure to only put it on if you know you won't break it.
Attach it to a chain and hang it on a button or buttonhole to make sure you don't lose it. You will find more information below
-
Get it fixed if it doesn't work. If you inherited the watch, it may not be in perfect condition. If it doesn't work as it should, see a reputable professional. You can search online for the one that best suits your needs.
- If you have found a professional online and cannot bring the watch to him in person because he lives far away, send it to him by mail (as long as you are absolutely sure of the quality of his work).
- Broken or faulty watches can still be worn as accessories, even if you can't check the time.
-
Clean it up. Many watches have blackened and marked parts, especially along the edges. Use a metal polish, some elbow grease, and a soft cloth.
If your watch has an engraving, don't forget to clean it. Proceed gently to remove any grime that has built up over time. Eventually, the look of the watch will change enormously
Step 2. Buy a pocket watch if you don't have one
You will find many types, you will only have to choose between materials and finishes.
- Choose a metal. Silver is often preferred by modern buyers as it pairs well with all color combinations and has a glossy finish. Other popular materials include brass, gold and steel.
- Consider the details. Some pocket watches have rather simple details, while others are particularly refined, perhaps with engravings, monograms and designs that can add a unique touch to your outfit.
-
Choose between new and used model. The advantages are not lacking in both cases.
- New watches will work for a long time without any problems and their design is trendy. But they are often more expensive than used ones.
-
Used watches have a great variety in models, engravings and finishes. Most of them cost less than new ones, but prices vary based on their collectible value.
Don't buy it on the internet: you won't know if it works well and you won't see its true size
Step 3. Get a chain
You will need it for two reasons: first, to secure the watch to your clothes and not drop it, and secondly, it is necessary to complete the look.
-
Choose a classic chain based on the finish of the watch: then, if it's steel, opt for a steel chain.
-
The weight and the intertwining of the chain depend on personal taste. If your style is elegant, choose a fine and subtle one. If you are an adventurous person and often find yourself doing heavy work, get one that is thick and durable.
Choose one that is durable enough to hold the watch steady should it be hit or pulled sharply
-
-
Add a strap and a pendant. If you are going to put the watch in a trouser pocket instead of wearing it on your torso, attach a leather strap and a charm to the watch which are usually more durable than the chain and suggest a more casual look.
You can also buy a leather strap to attach to a belt loop and clip the watch on the other end
-
Vary your collection. Use various chains according to your different outfits.
-
Use a different style and color strap and pendant than your watch to make it stand out.
However, your looks must be well thought out: don't choose a jumble of colors and styles. The watch and the chain will still have to combine with each other
Step 4. Choose a style
The pocket watch is an old-fashioned accessory, but there are many ideas to match it.
-
Classic style. Pair it with a suit and hang it on the vest. When you slip your watch into your pocket, the front will need to point towards you so you can see the time when you take it out.
If you are right-handed, the watch goes into the right pocket of the vest, and vice versa. This way, you can pull it out with your dominant hand
-
Casual style. Put it in a trouser pocket. Hang the chain from a loop and place it in the pocket corresponding to your dominant hand.
This look works best with a larger front watch, as you won't be able to see it up close unless you take it off the chain
-
Worker style. Pocket watches have never been the domain of the rich. Although today they are perceived as a noble accessory, in the past they were used by anyone who needed to check the time for business reasons. Try an unusual and retro look by pairing it with a dungaree and putting it in the bib.
- This look works best with a coarse, heavy chain.
- Complete the ensemble with a loose-fitting top, a hat and Doctor Martens.
-
Theatrical style. Since the pocket watch has an antique flavor, it can be used for themed outfits, such as costumes or combinations that reflect your belonging to a subculture.
- Buy an unusual pendant or an original chain to make the watch coordinate with the rest of the outfit.
- Pocket watches are associated with well-being and conservatism: put one in a denim vest belonging to a punk outfit to go against the grain.
- The pocket watch is a classy accessory and is ideal for a steampunk look. Pair it with a modern waistcoat or slip it into a t-shirt pocket to accentuate its old-fashioned touch.
Method 2 of 2: Keep the Pocket Watch in Good Condition
Step 1. Upload it every day
All watches, except new ones, will run fine for a maximum of 26-30 hours after being wound. The newer models last 46 hours. As a result, upload yours every day, no matter what kind it is.
Do this in the morning, as part of your daily routine, so the watch will run more reliably
Step 2. Clean it on a regular basis
Use a soft, dry chamois or microfiber cloth to wipe the oil and grime off the metal surface. If necessary, use some metal polish. Clean it every time you take it off.
- If you wear it most days, clean it two or three times a week, or as needed.
- Don't forget to periodically clean the inside of the watch with a dry cloth.
Step 3. Polish it every now and then
Use a special metal polish every two to three months. Apply a drop of product and carefully follow the package directions.
- If you need to remove blackened parts, avoid products that require immersion in liquid. You will damage the watch or cause the delicate internal parts to become loose.
- Use the same polish on the chain, assuming it's a similar material.
Step 4. Don't lose it
Always make sure that the chain is firmly attached to the watch and the item of clothing you are wearing.
