Step 1. Choose a ribbon

It is a good idea to choose a ribbon that matches your clothes or has a special texture, such as velvet or with an embossed print.

Step 2. Cut the ribbon

To make a standard-sized ribbon, use ribbon about 12 inches long. If you want a larger or smaller ribbon, use one that is shorter or longer than 30cm.

Step 3. Hold a strand of hair or all of your hair

It is advisable to tie the hair at the top or back with a rubber band to secure it.

If you want, you can even make two braids on either side of the head and add bows on the tips

Step 4. With one hand, wrap the ribbon around your hair

If you used a rubber band, wrap the ribbon over it to cover it.

Step 5. Take both sides of the ribbon and tie them to form a knot

Pull both sides and create a tight knot in the center of the hair or in the center of the elastic.

Step 6. Make a bow

Create two loops and tie them together to form a bow, as if you were tying your shoes.

Step 7. Look in the mirror and adjust the bow

Make sure the loops are the same size on both sides of the bow and that it sits straight on your head.

Apply hairspray or gel to remove any messy strands and to create a smooth, tidy look

Step 8. Hold the bow in place with petroleum jelly or corn syrup

Flakes tend to melt easily, especially for little girls who don't like having things on their heads. Place a thin layer of petroleum jelly or corn syrup under the center of the bow to hold it in place.

Optionally, place a thin layer of petroleum jelly or corn syrup in the center of the knot before tying the bow

Method 2 of 2: Using Your Hair

Step 1. Make a bun with a bow

This hairstyle is a graceful alternative to the classic bun or messy updo.

  • Start by gathering your hair into a high ponytail and tie it with an elastic or a ponytail leaving the lengths out.
  • Separate the chignon by creating two loops that will be on either side of the bow.
  • Use the tips to wrap the ends between the two rings, creating the illusion of a bow-shaped knot in the center.
  • Tie the bun with bobby pins and / or hairspray.

Step 2. Make a small bow with your hair

To make this hairstyle, you will need to leave a few strands of hair loose creating a more jaunty style.

  • Grab a small section of hair from both sides of the head. The bigger the strands, the bigger the bow will be, so decide now the size you want.
  • Tie the two strands together with an elastic or a ponytail to create a ponytail in the middle. Do not pass the tips through the elastic to leave a ring at the end of the elastic.
  • Divide the ring in two to create two smaller ones. Temporarily secure a ring to the side with bobby pins.
  • With your fingers, expand the loose ring and press it on the head in the shape of a bow. Insert a hairpin from top to bottom and another hairpin from bottom to top.
  • Repeat the step with the other ring.
  • At this point, you should have created the bow shape.
  • Take the rest of the tips of the tail and wrap them up and around the elastic to hide it. Secure the tips with bobby pins positioned under the bow.

Step 3. Make small bows without using bobby pins

This hairstyle creates two small ponytails with bows and does not require the use of hairpins. However, you will need a Topsy Tail or, if you don't have one, make one using the ends of a fly swatter.

  • Divide the hair into two equal sections on both sides of the head. Secure each section with an elastic, making sure that a little hair covers the ears and that the elastic is positioned just below the jaw.
  • Part a section of hair so that you have two equal sections and a thicker middle section. Try to make the two side sections as even as possible as these will be the loops of the bow.
  • Attach one of the side sections.
  • Take the Topsy Tail or the version you made yourself and put the rubber end on the top layer of the hair elastic. Twist the tool so that the side of the ring is close to the face.
  • Take a side section of hair and pull it through the ring-shaped section of the tool. The section of hair should form a small loop, which will become one half of the bow.
  • Pull the tool through the hair to remove it and push the elastic upwards to secure the lock and to have a nice, neat and tidy ring.
  • Repeat the process with the other side section of hair to create the other side of the bow. This time, however, position the Topsy Tail so that the side with the ring faces away from the face.
  • To hide the elastic, place the tool in its center, take a section of hair from the front and pass it through the ring-shaped end of the tool. Pull the tool down and remove it. Now you should have a nice elastic in the shape of a central bow.
  • Follow the same procedure on the other side of the head in order to have two tails with two bows. Fan out both flakes to fill the ring. Use hairspray to hold the flakes in place.

Warnings

  • Do not tie the bow too loose or it may fall out.
  • Try to keep the hair all together, as if it gets stuck in the bow it can be painful.
