Do you want to have wavy hair without ruining it with a curling iron? There are multiple ways to style your hair into beautiful waves without using heat. Read on!
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Prepare the Hair
Step 1. Wash your hair
Regardless of which method you use to naturally curl your hair, you need to wash it first. Curls are more beautiful with clean hair.
- Use shampoo to make sure your hair is clean.
- When using conditioner, don't apply it to the roots, instead focus on the tips. Your hair will not be weighed down and will look lighter and more natural.
Step 2. Dry and comb your hair
Comb your hair and remove excess water by squeezing it with a towel. Keep them slightly moist, so the curls will last longer.
- If your hair is very thick, use a hair dryer to remove some of the water. Your hair will need to be wet, but not soaking wet.
- Removing the knots will allow you to achieve smooth, attractive and defined waves.
Step 3. Apply a leave-in conditioner
Leave-in conditioners make hair smoother, stronger and more flexible. Start by applying a small amount, about 1 tsp. Too much can make your hair unwelcome.
- Apply the conditioner after dividing the hair into sections to ensure even distribution, both along the lengths and ends.
- You can add more conditioner as needed.
Step 4. Consider using a curl enhancer product
If you have very straight hair that is struggling to maintain a curly hairstyle, use a curl reviver spray or foam. Alternatively, apply a hairspray on the finished result to extend its life.
- It is often advisable to apply the chosen product on the inner side of the hair, the one facing the body, so that the roots do not appear in any way heavy or greasy.
- Lean forward and pull your hair over your head, then apply a small amount of product with your hands or the spray dispenser.
Method 2 of 4: Braiding the Hair to Curl it
Step 1. Divide your hair into sections
At this point they should still be wet. The size of the braid will determine the type of curls. The larger it is, the less defined the curls will be.
- If you want a frisé effect, divide your hair into very small sections to braid.
- If you want soft waves, just divide your hair into four or five sections.
Step 2. Weave one section at a time
Take a section of hair and divide it into three equal parts. Grab the left section in your left hand, the right section in the right, and the middle section between two fingers of your dominant hand. Cross the side sections overlapping the middle section.
- First bring the right section past the middle one. What used to be the right section is now the middle section.
- Now take the left section past the new middle section. What used to be the left section is now the middle section.
- Repeat the process until the braid is complete.
Step 3. Secure the braid
At the end of the braid, apply a rubber band or a hair clip to secure it and prevent it from melting. Your goal is to tie it securely so you can sleep on it or blow dry it.
Step 4. Braid the remaining hair pieces
Repeat the process for each section of hair. Remember that only the braided parts of hair will become wavy.
- Start by weaving them as close to the roots as possible so that the hair isn't only wavy from the middle onwards.
- Likewise, continue braiding as far as possible once you reach the ends of your hair, so they don't stay smooth once untied.
Step 5. Dry your hair
For defined and long-lasting waves, dry your hair completely before loosening the braids.
- Use a hair dryer to dry the braids.
- Sleep with your hair braided and undo your braids the next morning.
Step 6. Untie the braids
Unleash your waves by undoing your braids carefully. Gently run your fingers through the strands to separate them. Do not brush or comb your hair, otherwise it may become frizzy and your waves may completely lose their definition.
Step 7. Apply the lacquer
If your hair tends to fall out easily, set the curls in place with a coat of spray hairspray. Choose a regular-tight product so they don't appear stiff or sticky.
Method 3 of 4: Using Buns to Curl the Hair
Step 1. Divide damp hair into sections
The more sections you create, the wavier your hair will be. It is advisable to have one layer of upper strands and one layer of lower strands.
- If you intend to style your hair with a center or side parting, it is important to create it before dividing the hair into sections.
- 10-12 sections is a good number to start with. After the first few experiments you may decide that you want to increase or decrease the number, based on the length and diameter of your hair.
Step 2. Select a first strand to twist
You will create small buns, one section at a time. Start with a section close to your face to clearly see what you are doing. Continue continuing towards the nape of the neck.
Start with a section at the top of the head. If not, you will be bothered by the top section hair
Step 3. Twist your hair firmly
Twist the strand of hair in one direction to roll it securely around itself. Pulling the rolled lock outwards you will have to see it similar to a rope.
- A tight rotation will create a well defined wave.
- Remember not to pull your hair too hard, otherwise it could be damaged and the skin could ache.
Step 4. Create a bun
Wrap the lock on its own base forming a spiral, so that it resembles a coiled snake.
Step 5. Secure the bun in place
The length of your hair will determine the width of the bun and the tool needed to secure it in place. Larger buns may require an elastic placed around their circumference.
- Use bobby pins to secure smaller buns. Use two, crossing them for a more secure and even grip.
- If you wish, try using a nozzle instead of bobby pins.
Step 6. Leave the buns in place
Before it can be dissolved, the hair must have dried completely. Sleeping with damp hair often gives the best results. Alternatively, you can try using a hairdryer by setting it to the minimum speed, knowing however that the center of the chignon will be difficult to reach.
Step 7. Undo the chignon
When your hair is completely dry, gently undo each bun. Slowly run your fingers through the locks to soften overly defined curls. Don't use a comb or brush though.
To prolong the hairstyle until the evening, fix it with a little spray hairspray or gel carefully distributed with your hands
Step 8. Finished
Method 4 of 4: Using the Tattered Method to Curl the Hair
Step 1. Cut strips of fabric
For this method you need to have multiple small strips of fabric, about 10-12cm long and about 2.5cm wide. The number needed depends on the definition you want to give your curls.
- Start with twelve small strips, six for the top of the hair and six for the bottom.
- Cutting an old pillowcase or an old t-shirt is an inexpensive way to make your own rags.
Step 2. Separate a section of hair
You will have six rags to be placed along the top of the head, and another six that will be positioned a little lower. This means that you will have two sections of hair on each side and two sections on the back of the head, in each of the two layers of curls.
Remove a small amount of hair from your face. By dividing one side of the head in four, the amount will be that of a quarter
Step 3. Roll up a section of hair
Place the rag at the end of the strand and start rolling it under your hair. It may seem difficult at first and the spikes will tend to escape you. Bring them back into place and roll the hair upwards.
The first few times it will be helpful to look at what you are doing in the mirror
Step 4. Knot the rag
Grab the two ends of the fabric and legal to secure the hedgehog. Make sure it's tight enough not to melt away while you sleep, but not tight enough to have difficulty untying it the next day.
Step 5. Leave the rags on
Let your hair dry overnight, sleeping with the rags pinned to damp hair. The next day, untie the rags and free your waves.
- Run your fingers through your hair to turn the curls into soft waves. Do not use a comb or brush otherwise you will get an unwelcome frizz effect.
- If you are concerned that the new hairstyle will not last long, apply a spray hairspray to set your waves.
Step 6. Try using flexible sponge curlers
If you have a hard time applying fabric rags, buy sponge rollers. The process will be exactly the same, but instead of having to tie the fabric, simply wrap the curler on itself, or use the handy clip.
- Not everyone likes to sleep with curlers on their head, some find them annoying.
- Remember that the size of the curlers will determine the definition of the curls. Chunky curlers create soft waves, and vice versa.
Advice
- To add volume, style your hair upside down instead of adding creams or gels.
- When blow-drying your hair, be careful not to get it too close to your head or you risk burning your hair.
- To give shine, apply a special serum on your hair before creating braids, buns or putting on curlers; add some more when you melt them.
Warnings
- Make sure braids or buns are tight but not too tight, or you could damage your hair.
- If the conditioner doesn't work well on your hair, try using a hairspray. Find one that doesn't make your hair like tow and don't use too much.
- Start by applying only small amounts of the product. If necessary, you can always add more, while it is difficult to remove the excesses without having to start over.
