If you've always wanted to freshen up your backyard patio but didn't know how to do it until now, roll up your sleeves and dive into this easy tutorial. In just one weekend, you can turn your old patio into a beautiful, repainted one, making your neighbors jealous. And no one will know that you did it all by yourself.
Steps
Step 1. Prepare the concrete surface to work on
Move all the objects that are there such as furniture, vases and toys.
Step 2. Thoroughly clean the patio to remove all dirt and dust
-
Scrub well to remove all oil residue and any kind of dirt from the concrete surface.
-
Rent a pressure sprayer to remove stubborn dirt.
-
Use paint remover or a scraper to remove traces of old paint. While it can be time consuming, this step is critical to achieving a satisfying result. Otherwise you will end up with an uneven surface and the patio will not be painted evenly.
-
Pay proper attention to cleaning your patio. Even if it doesn't look dirty, clean it anyway. Dust residue can be difficult to spot, but it will ruin the result. The level of cleanliness will strongly determine the success of your work.
Step 3. Choose the paint you prefer
The color will have to match your backyard décor. Ask a professional painter for advice on the type of outdoor concrete paints that can withstand various climatic conditions.
Step 4. Using masking tape, protect any items you do not want to paint, for example patio edges, door parts, etc
Step 5. Start painting
Use a long-handled brush or a telescopic brush shaft to make your job easier.
-
Start at one corner with light strokes, moving outward. Cover the entire patio area with a thin layer of paint.
-
Let the first layer dry completely. It should take 3-4 hours, or what the manufacturer indicates.
Step 6. Apply more coats of paint until you get the intensity you want
Always allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats.
Step 7. Give your new patio time to dry thoroughly
It may take several days, depending on the climate.
Step 8. Consider applying a fixative
It will help you prevent wear damage. Consult the manufacturer's instructions on this.
Advice
- Give fresh or recently repaired concrete time to dry before you begin painting. Generally the recommended time is 28-30 days.
- For a first project choose a solid color, so you don't have to follow too difficult designs and motifs.
