Have you ever tried to catch someone by surprise by acting stealthily, only to see them turn around and wonder why you made all that noise? Ever tried to sneak out of the house to get caught at the door? Being silent and stealthy takes practice but everyone can learn how. If you want to know how to move in the woods, on the streets and even in your garden without making any sound, read.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Part One: Sneak Around

Be Stealthy Step 1
Be Stealthy Step 1

Step 1. Walk like an animal

You know how deer, pumas and other animals move in the forest? People tend to be noisy, alerting everyone to their presence for miles. The key to moving like an animal is knowing the environment. Pay attention to the terrain you move into, try to slide over it instead of bumping into it.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings. If there is a branch hanging down, bend over instead of moving it and rustling the leaves.
  • Walk where there is coverage. Whether you are walking through trees, buildings or furniture, stay where you are sheltered like an animal would. Do not move into open areas, where you would be easily seen instead.
  • Make soft movements. Think of the cat trying to ensnare its prey. Move your body rhythmically but firmly. Random sounds would be easier to identify.
  • Try to run the same way, stealthily and practice being quiet and hardly noticeable. Don't worry about how fast you go.

Step 2. Move close to the ground

When you squat close to the ground, exert less force with each foot so that you walk almost silently. Learn to walk in a crouch, absorbing your body weight with your knees. Engage all the muscles.

Step 3. Walk toe to heel

Putting the heel down first usually produces a noise that others hear clearly. It also prevents you from crouching easily and distributing weight evenly throughout your body. Putting on your toes first and then your heels will move you silently and smoothly on any terrain. It will feel unnatural at first, so it's important to practice before trying the moves on the pitch.

You can also run with the same method. It's easier to walk barefoot or with light shoes that don't have too much cushioning. Your body will spontaneously tend to use the front of the foot instead of forcing the heels to the ground

Step 4. Follow the ground

When practicing sneaking, walking in a straight line from A to B isn't always the best choice. Consider which path you may need to take to be less likely to get caught. Look for a way to get there without anyone crossing the street, spending too much time outdoors or walking over things that might make noise.

  • If you are in the woods, walk along paths or areas without leaves and sticks. Beware of puddles, gravel, dry branches.
  • On the streets of the city keep to the buildings and alleys. It crosses together with many people. Avoid gravel and wooden walkways which tend to make noise. Avoid areas where your passage would produce an echo such as tunnels and underpasses.
  • If you are inside, walk among the furniture. Stay out of rooms full of stuff. Take the back door instead of the main one. Choose rooms with rugs and carpets and marble stairs instead of wooden ones.
  • If you have to go up the wooden stairs, try to stay in the center. Structurally it is the most solid point and minimizes noise.
  • Don't stay on the road if you are running away from a car. It should go without saying but you'd be surprised if not.

Step 5. Know when to stay still

If you are following someone from behind or are trying to move to a position without being seen, standing still will be of great help to you. When it is clear that someone has heard you break a branch or touch a piece of furniture, hide and remain still. Wait patiently until the person leaves and no longer seems certain of your presence, then carefully move in their direction.

Step 6. Check your breathing

Breathe slowly and rhythmically to prevent them from hearing you. And do it through the nose instead of the mouth. If you are short of breath, try to widen your larynx as much as possible. It may sound strange but it works. Exercise makes perfect.

If you are doing this for the first time you may be afraid of getting caught, which may lead you to breathe faster. If you feel panic, try to picture yourself on a beach on a summer day or some other "happy place" in your mind. Stay there until you feel calm

Step 7. Practice soft landings

If you have to jump over obstacles like gates and fences, a soft landing will allow your body, not just your knees and feet, to absorb the impact. Land on the front of your feet and crouch right away. Look for a place without materials that make noises such as leaves or pebbles.

Method 2 of 3: Part Two: Wear Suitable Clothes

Step 1. Choose the right clothing to be stealthy

Shoes can be useful or betray your presence. You will have to choose the ones that are suitable for the environment. Walk and run in the shoes of your choice, so you get used to whatever sounds they make.

  • If you are at home, it is best to wear socks that are soft and comfortable. Even barefoot is a good solution. Bring your shoes with you and wear them when you are out and about.
  • If you are in an area with lots of leaves and grass, use socks or bare feet but wear shoes. You could wear swimming shoes but be careful, if they get wet they could emit an unmistakable splash when they hit the ground.
  • To cross a place with pebbles and stones you have to use a pair of reinforced socks or go barefoot. The soft socks cushion the impact while the shoes will push the pebbles and make them resonate.
  • To walk in a mixed environment such as suburban, gravel, grassy streets, etc., wear running shoes with flexible and soft soles. Be careful not to get flat feet with these shoes.

Step 2. Wear clothes that hide you

The ones you choose must have the same colors of the ground and of the light as there is at the time you move. Dark colors at night and natural tones during the day. Choose comfortable fabrics and don't make rustling sounds. Cotton and polyester are the best.

  • If you move around the city at night, something black and snug will do. If you are in a natural area (like a field or forest) wear loose stuff to distort and distort the figure. Dark brown and green are better than black.
  • Never wear anything that reflects light. Remove the jewelry and choose contact lenses instead of glasses.
  • Don't carry heavy things. You will get tired and it will become more difficult to move. In addition to making you risk making more noise.

Step 3. Get night vision gear

Infrared visors or goggles are useful for the night. Even binoculars allow to see distant objects.

Method 3 of 3: Part Three: Successfully Complete Missions

Be Stealthy Step 11

Step 1. Get to know the area

Walk in the sunlight and take note of the soil and location. Draw a map of the area you will cover and be sure to study it thoroughly before setting out on a mission. Make it as detailed as possible by drawing any obstacles and useful hiding places - hollow logs, empty sheds, large bins, etc.

Be Stealthy Step 12

Step 2. Create hand signals to communicate

If you go on a mission with a friend, you won't be able to shout to talk to each other. Learn sign language or create your own to help you explore the area without speaking.

Step 3. Go to the bathroom before you leave

Have you ever played hide-and-seek in a truly amazing place and suddenly found yourself in the urge to pee? Often suspense and the excitement of being found stimulate the reaction of intestines and bladder. Even if you feel you don't need it, it's still wise to go to the bathroom first.

Be Stealthy Step 14

Step 4. Use distraction techniques if necessary

Bring a couple of small, solid objects that you can throw away that will make some noise. Make sure they're natural like rocks or something from the environment, or the person you're trying to distract may get suspicious. Pulling something can be useful as a diversion if someone nearby thinks they've seen or heard something.

  • Take one of these objects and throw it on a solid surface facing the opposite direction to make noise. If that product was higher, the person will likely seek the source, allowing you to slip away unnoticed.
  • You can take a stick or something to throw away. The person will move to inspect while you go in the opposite direction. Remember that if the object is too large, the person may see you or understand from which direction the distraction was created.

Step 5. Do not do anything illegal

Don't violate private property without permission and don't use these tips to break into a house and rob it. Otherwise they will catch you. Remember that movies are fiction and thieves run away out of plot duty.

Don't walk around with fake weapons. If you're using an airsoft rifle, make sure it's not loaded

Be Stealthy Step 16

Step 6. Know what to do if they catch you

If you're sneaking into a garden that's not yours and someone yells at you, don't panic. The natural instinct is to freeze in panic and breathe heavily. Prepare a story or explain that you were just playing with friends.

Step 7. Don't be afraid to get dirty

Be prepared to roll in the grass and jump into the ditch if you need to hide quickly.

Step 8. Enjoy the excitement

Going to places other than the usual just because you can and with no bad intentions is exciting. It may sound unusual but it is true for most of the people who participate in "Urban Adventuring." If you can't stay out all night for an extreme experience, try free running.

A fun thing to do with a friend who likes to play sneaky is to set a goal, such as a cookie jar in a hard-to-reach place. You should do this with peace of mind, even if it won't be easy to remove something from a container. With a friend, playing spies becomes intense and exciting

Advice

  • The noisiest parts of a house are the floors. If you really don't want to get caught, try crawling to absorb the impact and not be felt.
  • Holding your breath helps you feel better, but be careful not to exhale too quickly.
  • If you need to escape, stay low to reduce the noise.
  • When working with a friend, try to maintain hand and visual cues. For example, if you are trying to go from point A to point B without being seen, use two fingers in front of your eyes to indicate that you see someone and raise as many fingers as there are people.
  • Remember when you are out in the dark and others are in and in the light, they don't see you and you do.
  • Try to stay in areas where the noise level is high: if there are dishwashers, sprinklers, TVs, etc. they will hide the noise you make.
  • Never chew gum, it makes too much noise.
  • When you have to cross a threshold, slowly turn the door handle while lifting it slightly. This will move the hinges a bit and avoid squeaking. Apply hand pressure to the center of the door body. The surface will absorb the squeak and reduce its effect.
  • You can always use those opaque spotted nets to hide and blend into the shadows.
  • If you are wearing sneakers or any solid footwear, walk on the outer edges of your feet. This is what soldiers do in combat!
  • Practice climbing objects on your own to improve in those situations that require fast movements. Also try with more difficult objects but with someone.
  • Bring a friend - two heads are better than one. Be careful who you choose. Evaluate the situation well before taking it with you.
  • One of the biggest problems is dogs. If they see you they will bark. If they bark, others will know that someone is there. If they know that someone is there, they will try to figure out who. And they will find you.
  • Never wear black in the woods because it is not a natural color, instead wear a dark blue or a dark green.
  • When you spy on someone in public, you appear as if you are doing something. They probably won't notice you if you look busy.
  • If you put your heel down first, then slowly move your foot towards the ground, to make as little noise as possible.
  • Try to use camouflage and light and dark green makeup to hide your face as well as an army cap, or color your hair as well.
  • Baggy and tight clothing both have big benefits. With large ones your profile will look less human. With tight ones you won't brush against people. We recommend the wool ones.
  • If you use any lubricants, we recommend the WD-40. Not only is it odorless but it is easy to use and hide. However, it is easily damaged, lost or jammed. So be very careful when using it.
  • Try to move and work your ankles to keep your feet from creaking as you explore. The noise could arouse suspicion.
  • If you find yourself having to climb stairs, it is best to do so by putting your feet between the balusters of the handrail. Move your feet and slide your hands to keep your balance.
  • Always keep in mind the shadows you can cast and the reflection you might have. You would betray yourself.
  • You can crouch and move from this position. In closed areas try to find shelter and stay down.
  • Bring a video camera if possible to register and watch yourself.
  • If you are approaching someone (or a group) near a light source (fire, light pole, etc.) try to stay out of the cone of light (but not too much) because their irises are not adapted to the dark. It almost always works.
  • Don't bring your cell phone, iPod, or other electronic item. The light would fool you. A small camera is fine but it is really tiny and without a flash. You don't want to be caught in the act because of a text message.
  • Buy yourself a lubricant like WD-40 or similar but not in a spray so as not to make noise. Apply it to the hinges to keep them from squeaking. Better if it is odorless.
  • If you get caught by friends and parents, have an apology ready. If, on the other hand, the police catch you, be prepared to take a ride to the central station.
  • If you are wearing socks, walk with the whole sole down.

Warnings

  • Be prepared to face the consequences if you get caught and make up a story.

  • Don't break the law or you will pay the consequences.
  • Behave stealthily at your own risk.
  • Don't use these tips and tricks to harm someone.
  • Make sure you don't walk on glass or rough surfaces.
