Do you always find yourself losing when playing UNO? It's a fun card game to play with family or friends, but losing is never pleasant. With a little strategy, you can improve your playing technique and impress your opponents.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Learn the Ground Rules
Step 1. Start playing
The number of players can vary from 2 to 10. The game is suitable for all people aged 7 and over. Deal 7 cards face down to each player. The remaining cards must be placed in the center of the game table and the last must be turned over, so as to form the discard pile. Each player looks at their cards, taking care not to show them to the others.
There are some variations in which more cards are dealt. Otherwise, the game continues normally
Step 2. Play your hand
The player who starts the game must match one of the cards in his hand with the one on top of the discard pile. You can play one that matches the color or number of the one on the game board. For example, if the card on the table is a green 7, you can play any green card or a 7 of any color. You can also play an action card, which is one of those that are not numbered. The Skip a Turn, Change Turn and Draw Two Cards cards must match the color of the top card in the discard pile. It is possible to play a Change Color or a Four Card Draw at any time. Once a player has played, it is the next player's turn.
If you don't have a card to play, you need to draw one. If you draw one that you can use, you can play it right away. If you cannot play the card you drew, the hand passes to the next player
Step 3. Finish the game
The game continues until one of the players has used all the cards in their hand. As soon as you have a card in your hand, you must say ONE. If one of the other players discovers that you are left with one card, but you did not say ONE, you must draw two more. When one of the players has used all the cards he had in his hand, the others give theirs to the winner and add up all the points. The value of the numbered cards corresponds to their number; Skip a Turn, Change Turn, and Draw Two Cards are worth 20 points, and Change Color and Draw Four Cards are worth 50.
The game ends when a player reaches 500 points and is declared the winner
Method 2 of 3: Using Numbers and Colors
Step 1. Play the highest numbered cards first
When it's time to score, the points you give to the winner of the hand will be based on the cards you have left. The numbered cards are counted according to their number, therefore a 9 is worth 9 points, an 8 is worth 8 and so on. So in order not to be left with many points in hand to give to the winner, it is better to play the cards with the highest value first. This way, you'll have fewer points in your hand if someone else wins.
- In case you have high number cards of a different color than the one in play, try to change color by matching a lower number, but of the same color as your high cards.
- The only exception is the card with the number 0. There are only four such cards in a deck, so if you are trying to prevent another opponent from changing color, play a 0 to make it more difficult for him to play the same number as a deck. other color.
Step 2. Finish the colors
If you have many cards of the same color, try to play as many as possible before the color is changed. It is preferable not to arrive towards the end of the game with four cards of as many different colors: this will make it more difficult for you to win the game.
Remember that you can always re-establish the color of which you have more cards by matching equal numbers of different colors
Step 3. Pay attention to your opponents
If one of them has played several cards of the same color, it might be better to change it to decrease the likelihood that he can play another card. You can do this by playing a card of the same number, but a different color. Conversely, if you've noticed that another player has had to draw in the last few turns because he didn't have the color in play, do your best to keep it. This will force him to draw more cards and increase your chances of winning.
Method 3 of 3: Using Action Cards
Step 1. Use the Skip a Turn card
This card forces the player after you to lose the turn: it is very useful to prevent playing who is left with only one card in hand. Play it, in the event that the opponent after you has only one card, so as to make him skip a turn and pass the hand to the player after him. This way, you will also have an extra turn to play. When the game comes back to you, experiment with another strategy or make sure you discard the card with the highest value.
- Be careful not to keep too many Skip a Spin cards: one or two can be useful, but too much will lead to too many points in your hand at the end of the game. Each of these is worth 20 points.
- If you are one of the last two players left in the game, you can use the Skip Round cards one behind the other, as they automatically return the turn to you. Be careful to conclude with a Skip a Turn card that gives you the opportunity to match another card: it is preferable to avoid having to draw as you cannot match the color.
Step 2. Use the Change Turn card, which is able to reverse the direction of the game
If you are trying to maneuver the game, it can be very useful to use it to take away from the player who has fewer cards in hand the chance to play. Use it, in case the player after you has a few or only one cards in hand. This will prevent him from taking his turn and give others a chance to force him to draw more cards.
- In case you are only two players, the Change Turn card works exactly like the Skip a Turn card. In this case, you can use both when you want - it's a great way to quickly reduce the number of cards in your hand.
- Also be careful not to keep too many Change Turn cards. They are useful, but they are worth 20 points each, in case you still have them in your hand at the end of the game.
Step 3. Use the Change Color card to change the color of the hand
This can be very useful if the next player has played a series of cards of the same color and is left with only a few cards in hand. Use it to pick a color you think it doesn't have, or go for the color of most of your cards. It will help you discard several and win the game.
Don't stockpile too many. They are worth 50 points, in case you still have them in hand at the end of the game
Step 4. Play a Two Card Draw (2+) and a Four Card Draw (4+) card
The former is a great way to flesh out the hand of those close to you and make sure they don't win the game. In case the player after you has only a few cards in hand, play one of them to force him to draw two. In this way you will take the advantage, as he will have to draw and lose the opportunity to play a card. The Draw Four Cards card works the same way, but you can use it to your advantage to change the color and choose one that matches your cards. In this way, the person after you will have to draw and you will have the possibility to play more cards than you have in your hand.
- If you have noticed that the player in front of you has only a few cards in hand, use a Change Turn card and then a Draw Two Cards or Draw Four Cards. Even if he has a chance to play a card, he will then have to draw more in the next round, thus filling his hand, so you will be closer to victory.
- If you intend to stockpile some to use at the appropriate time, try to keep those Draw Two Cards, rather than Draw Four Cards. In case you still have them in your hand at the end of the game, the latter are worth 50 points, while the former are worth only 20.
