Granite counters are a great embellishment for a kitchen or bathroom. By its nature, granite is not easy to handle. But now there are pre-shaped models on the market, with detailed installation instructions that make them suitable even for beginners. If you need to install a counter in an area that has more than one corner or has a particular shape, you should consult a professional. In other cases it shouldn't be difficult to install a one- or two-piece surface following these instructions.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Take the measurements
Step 1. Install the furniture
Make sure they are at the same height and securely attached to the floor and wall.
Step 2. Make sure the walls are square
If they aren't, make a note of them when you mark your measurements.
Step 3. Use wrapping paper or another solid, lightweight material to create a counter outline
Mark accurately the position of the sink and any other necessary openings.
Step 4. Decide on the border style
Let the template protrude slightly from the edge of the furniture.
Step 5. Choose the type of granite
Also choose a material for the riser behind the counter.
Step 6. Get advice from the vendor for installation
When you have decided on the material, double check if the measurements of the template are correct.
Step 7. Order the granite
Method 2 of 5: Prepare the furniture to support the weight of the counter
Step 1. Apply a 20mm sheet of plywood to the furniture
It will serve to support the weight of the counter. Cut it to size with the furniture.
Step 2. Check that the plywood rests evenly on all furniture
Step 3. Secure the plywood sheet to the furniture with screws
Drill smaller holes before inserting the screws to avoid breaking the wood.
Method 3 of 5: Install the granite slab
Step 1. Get help to put the plate in place
Handle it with care, the granite could break.
Step 2. Put the plate in place
Make sure it fits properly in the venue.
Step 3. Mark the shape of the sink hole with a marker
Step 4. Remove the granite slab momentarily
Set it upright in a safe place to avoid breaking it.
Step 5. Drill a pilot hole in the plywood sheet with a drill and end mill
Use a jigsaw to cut out the shape of the sink. You can overhang from the marked margin by only 3mm.
Step 6. Install the sink
Method 4 of 5: Level and glue the granite
Step 1. Reposition the granite slab
Try to match the edges as closely as possible.
Step 2. Make sure the plate is level
Once this is done, lift it up one last time.
Step 3. Apply a piece of silicone to the edges of the plywood sheet
Make circles every 12-30cm.
Step 4. Apply a line of silicone also on the edge of the sink, both on the lower side in contact with the wood and on the upper side, which will come into contact with the granite
Step 5. Reposition the granite slab
Make sure it is level again.
Method 5 of 5: Seal the seams
Step 1. Apply tape to the inside and outside of the joint between sink and granite
Step 2. Use resins of similar colors to granite
To get a better result, try three different shades.
Step 3. Add 3% catalyst to the resin
Apply the resin to the joint with a putty knife. Repeat with the other colors until you find the one that matches best. Work quickly, as once the catalyst is added the resin hardens quickly.
Step 4. Once the application is finished, remove the tape
When the resin dries you can smooth it with the special tool.
Advice
Wait 3-4 weeks before using the counter
