Dried moss is a material that can be used for a wide variety of home projects, for example, to make wreaths or for flower arrangements. Ready-made dried moss can be quite expensive, especially considering that many homes already have the materials needed to produce a large amount of it. Read the article to learn how to dry moss on your own and save money.
Steps
Step 1. Collect moss from your garden
Rocks and trees are very rich in moss. Place a scraper under one side of the moss and slowly move it forward lifting it from the rock, tree or other surfaces. Remove the moss in pieces as large as possible.
- If you are having a hard time getting the moss off neatly, use a rake.
- Use a plastic scraper for particularly stubborn pieces of moss.
Step 2. Put the collected moss into small bags
Step 3. Bring the moss indoors and arrange each piece on a flat, clean surface
Remove any sprigs, leaves, and needles of pine or other material stuck in the moss and discard.
Step 4. Remove the moisture from the moss
Place it on paper or another absorbent surface. Press the palm of your hand into the moss (when squeezing it, be careful not to crumple it in your hands. When the moss dries up it can become brittle and more difficult to handle. By spreading it out, you may break it into smaller pieces). Arrange the partially dried pieces of moss on a flat surface.
The surface must be very ventilated (open windows, external breeze, fans or other sources of air)
Step 5. Put some light wire mesh on the moss
The netting protects it from sudden wind waves and prevents it from twisting or twisting as it dries up.
Step 6. Let the moss dry for several days or until completely dry
Step 7. Save the moss for craft projects
-
Remove the twigs as if to dry it.
-
Put the moss in a pot.
-
Add one part of glycerin and three parts of water.
-
Add fabric dye (if desired).
-
Heat the contents until almost boiling.
-
Remove from the heat.
-
Let it cool for an hour.
If you want the moss to take on a more intense color, let it soak in the glycerin, water, and dye solution for a longer period
Step 8. Remove the colored and ready moss
Squeeze out any excess liquid. Dries as you would normal, non-colored moss.
Step 9. Store in plastic bags until use
Step 10. Finished
Advice
Wait until all the water has been removed as if the moss is still wet it can easily mold, ruining the moss itself and the projects
Warnings
- Do not use artificial heat sources to dry the moss, which would otherwise become too brittle and difficult to handle.
- When you dry it, make sure the pieces are separated from each other. If several pieces are dried together, it will be difficult to divide them.
